Actually, at higher speed you have less reaction time. When something starts to go wrong, faster you travel, sooner you end up in the middle of it because you travelled that distance faster.

2 cars driving 50km/h with 50 meter distance and 2 cars going 100km/h with 50 meter distance and you have very bad situation in last case because 50 meters is travelled far faster in latter case. (numbers totally random)

Of course this could be solved by adding safety distance, but how often you see that?

Must say, that in Finland I have seen both the best and worst drivers ever :D

Quin and DMC seem to have some very unique ideas about Physics - and ways to calculate such phenomena

But what the hell should I know - I'm only a senior engineer designing bridges and tunnels for years

They are gung-ho and hell-bent to defend their wish to travel at 150+ and more (130 is slow) no matter what it costs in terms of stress, lives, injuries, pollution - whatever

The idea of 'saving' a few minutes so one can plump their fat butt for those few minutes more in front of a TV watching Survivor or some other such crap is ludicrous.

I'm outtahere on this 'discussion'

Mr Malmberg... You're very quick with pointing a finger at other people, but you yourself, only-senior-engineer-designing-bridges-and-tunnels-for-years, have gotten quite stuck in your ideas yourself...
DMC wrote: Try an example. A 2-lane autobahn. You are driving at 150 KPH in the left lane. You are 50 metres behind a car in the right lane when it pulls into the left lane ahead of you. How much time do you have to react to avoid running into the back of it?
The variable is always "the other", right?
Even if you drive 120, your stopping distance (braking distance + reaction time) is in average (depending on the car, ofcourse) about 100 meters.
So if a car 50 meters in front of you on the right lane all of a sudden pulls up to the left lane, you're still toast.
And even if you keep an distance of 100-150 meters with the car in front of you, there's ALWAYS some yahoo who's going to merge, and thus halving the distance between you.
It's ALWAYS the other one who's wrong, right? :?

As for the overspeed... I think you should stick to building bridges, Mr Malmberg... That way you feel safe from all the yahoos on the road, and we are safe from another snail creeping on the left lane, and everyone's happy :)

I'm italian and in my opinion driving a car in Finland is really relaxing..

Just visit cities like Rome or Neaples and you can understand what I mean
