Is this normal weather for the time of year?

Post by oscard » Sun Dec 16, 2007 9:23 pm

Hello to everyone on the forume!
I have been in northern Finland for a few weeks and I am amazed how warm it is for December, often above zero. Over in Sweden it's been well below zero even in Stockholm, now minus 8 I see.

Is this normal for December? I am wondering if there will even be much snow or skating this winter..

Oscar

About every other Xmas in the metro area is more or less without snow (as commented on the news today).
Get in there...

Last year it was the same as this in Helsinki. It didn't really snow until mid way through January and it never got seriously cold.

IIRC the coldest we had in Espoo last winter was about -22 C and that was only for a couple of days.

That is not seriously cold, at least not in my experience.

It was during the ski holiday. My brother was here and I was glad it was so
cold since he'd spent so much money on his long johns.

We had "Black Christmas" here in central Finland in 1972, 1992, 2006 and it's looking like 2007 will be too

Global warming is here.

Oh dear this sounds dreary..my SO thinks that it won't get much below zero this winter - but is not Finnish though so I'm still hopeful of a bit of a winter in the new year.

Real cold hits in january and february. Still good time to have nice, freezing weather.

And don't be like frank, if one of the barbarians tells to get more clothes...

Get more clothes. It's really inconvenient to chisel frozen foreigners off the sidewalks.

Yes, and you cannot get your gin and tylenol at 3am in a supermarket either ;)
Cheers, Hank W.

Average temperatures are about the same. Lots of statistics are available on the FMI website.

Average during period 1961-1990 = -8.9°C

Average during period 1971-2000 = -7.9°C

I'm no expert, however I'm told a 1 degree shift in average temperature in such a short timescale is significant.
