New graduates then what job?

Post by userface » Thu Dec 20, 2007 11:16 am

Hello, I have just graduated recently and I am seeking for work. Unfortunately, I only have 6-months experience (traineeship). I just want some advice regarding on how to find a spot in some precious company.

I have checked websites and most of the jobs required experience.

I just want to ask what can be the better way to obtain an entry-level position. Should I apply for traineeship first?

I am a business grad.

Do you speak finnish well?

And best way is to keep looking for jobs. And send applications to companies with least required experience. They sometimes just have to accept guys with less than desired experience since alternative is not to hire.

^thanks for the info.

I have a good understanding of finnish. but I am not fluent still. I try asking companies and calling them every now and then, all they say is they keep my application in mind. then, i receive a rejection letter.

I am really confused now on how to get an entry-level work here.

Well, it's hard for native to get first job unless you have connections.

Twice as hard for someone not speaking the language. All you can do is keep sending applications and try to make yourself noticed. Calling once and asking about job, including perhaps question on their planned schedule, can be benefit. But don't call if you don't have anything to ask!

And never bother them unless they express wish to hear from you again. It just is not worth it. If you did not pick their interest with first contact, odds are slim that second unasked contact will change it. Or third, fourth and so on.

well those two are different things...

recruitment agency provides job candidate selection services for companies where as temp agencies provide temporary employees for limited terms to companies.

^^ thanks for the reply dude. I will keep in mind to market myself as a student.

It gets very difficult to find work as a graduate without proper training. Can I know if it is viable in Finland to call up companies and ask if they'll hire me as a trainee? because as I have been telling, when I call them, they simply answer to look the open jobs at their websites

Hmm. Should I call those hiring managers again and tell them I am looking for traineeship?

@userface: I'm in the same boat as you are. And get the same reactions, so I kind of understand what you're going through. Good luck to ya !

^thanks mies, we need luck to conquer fancy companies here in Finland.

BTW, when the hiring people say they'll keep you in mind? what does that basically mean? It seems vague to me whether or not I have to follow up or stop calling us and we'll try to remember you when something comes up.

I hope it's the former.
