Freelance ICT

Hello there, new on these forums.

1st off let me introduce myself.

I am a student currently studying BND IT and CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and have background qualifications such as CISCO IT essentials and GNVQ in IT.

I have been working with computers since i was 10 and since then have a very good knowledge of computer networks, systems and the repairing and setting up side of it all.

What i would like information on is freelance IT in Finland, preferably in the Uusimaa, Varkaus or Espoo area's.



How would i go about doing freelance IT in these area's, what would i need to do, i.e. would i need a job permit?

Also, is any information you will be willing to give to help me get going?

Before you get buggered off by all the people telling you you have no business in Finland and that you should read all the posts about foreigners coming here without doing some proper research, let me ask you WHAT exactly is the reason for you coming to Finland, of all countries?

Do you just want to work as a freelance ICT'er and do you hope to find a Finnish blonde along the way some time in the near future, or do you have a good reason to come here?

Because...
If you show up at the immigration police and they ask you "what's you're reason for coming here" and you say "oh, I just want to freelance ICT and pick up a blonde along the way" you're going to be put on the first plane back.
Oh no, you have to arrange all the permits through the embassy in the country you're living in. So then you're going to get a big fat stamp "DENIED" on your form...

So... What's your reason to come here?

My reason for going to Finland is to not only do freelance ICT but to study language and do Uni here.

So, ask again after you got admitted to the university and you got a student residence permit. If you have any time after studying. CCNA should open some doors - where there are IT companies of course. What is in Varkaus?

Im yet to look into Varkaus to see whats there, but Espoo and Uusimaa have bigger companies there so it may turn out worthwhile.

Is there any information you can give me about freelancing in Espoo or Uusimaa?

I looked about IT companies in Varkaus and there is very little.

In Finland IT freelance market is not well developed. It is very hard to find freelance job. To find such job you should be very skilled and very experienced. Basically, this is final stage of carrier. Normally, for short-term assignments company hire people to solve they business critical problems.

Well, it is very difficult to recommend something specific without knowing the person. But you should definitely obtain MSc before starting freelance work. Normally, you should work at least 15 years in the area and have many connections among of management guys.

Btw, without a degree it will be very hard to find any IT job here.

Would depend on if this degree is recognised in Finland. Or rather in the company for which you are trying to work.

But without very long experience they won't hire you as freelancer.
It would be necessary for you to be so good in programming that you could be put into job of solving some tight spot in very short time for them to consider freelance jobs unless totally strapped for workforce.

This because getting you acquainted with project takes time, usually time of one or more of their employees as well. Longer it takes, more it costs. For new employees this is investment. For freelancer who is bound to fly away... Expense.

I know Intel have an office out in Helsinki, maybe after i've done my MCSE it'll be best to apply there and see how it goes.

Intel in Helsinki, R&D center?! Hmm, I didn't know it. Please write how it went there.

The Intel Helsinki office's are the Marketing and sales department, R&D is in America. hehehe.
