Job: Windows Programmer (VB)

Post by Charles Monk » Thu Dec 27, 2007 1:40 pm

In 2008 we'll be looking for a VB programmer. (.NET or migrating to .NET from VB6).

Being a quick-witted and diligent developer is the most important qualification, and would compensate for not having years of VB experience. General Windows programming experience is needed, though. For example, I'd expect you to know how to make an API call, and what the registry is, and the difference between a class and an interface: that sort of thing.

We're in Karkkila, about an hour north-west of Helsinki. Full or part-time is possible. The working language is English. The workplace is comfortable and pleasant. We pay generously. The work we do is interesting and worthwhile.

If you're interested, then please PM me.

CM.

Hey! Clearly you have not understood that this is Finland! Foreigners have jobs here lining up like there is no tomorrow. And no need to speak finnish! In fact most employers prefer if employees do not speak single word of finnish!

No, I did not get bad vibes from certain thread here.

If you speak C or are a lord of Cobol, then you don't necessarily need to speak with the proles... except your manager in the yearly review.
Cheers, Hank W.

I think the benefit of the doubt is deserved. This Forum layout is rather bewildering to a newcomer (he registered 4 mins before posting, you'll notice). Once you are logged in then you see a little PM button under the member's name, but before that, there's nothing to indicate what PM means. I guess he clicked reply, then got told to register, then mickey-moused an account and sent his reply. Reasonable behaviour.

Maybe it's not immediately clear what 'please PM me' is supposed to mean to a non-native English speaker. Post Menopause? Post Meridiem? Even if you know that it stands for 'Private message', that's confusing 'cos it's a noun, not a verb.

Wikipedia has a list of meanings for PM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PM), in which the bulletin board meaning 'Personal message' appears at down at around number 30, along with some things I've never heard of, like 'Porch Monkey' and 'Pistolet Makarova'. Looking at the canonical abbreviation/accronym list (http://www.astro.umd.edu/~marshall/abbrev.html#P) would lead you to conclude that it stands for 'Pardon me', implying that I meant: "If you're interested, then please pardon me me". Hmmm.

He did me a favour anyway because all this random chit-chat has bumped the post back up the list. I PM-ed him and we got in touch (even though he didn't mention COBOL).

As it says in the original post ...

"If you're interested, then please PM me."

Maybe this could be a first-stage filter for job applicants. What do you think, Raamv?
