Inserting ÄÖ, Quicker than Alt+Shift, Shift;/Shift'/Shift132

Just found this drag and drop ä and ö toolbar which remains 'on top' saving the hassle of switching between Finnish and English keyboards or doing the Alt 132 stuff.

Just did a post-post search and found out Mago (now back in Oz) found it first.

Credit where it's due.

Not sure how my uk keyboard looked as I've had a Finnish one for so long ... but at least most Euro keyboards should have an umlaut key ¨ mine is next to the return key.

Hit the umlaut key then the vowel you want...

ä ë ï ö ü

If you are using an american keyboard, you can learn the position of the keys and swap between the finnish and english formats on the fly.

you use the language settings in control panel to install a second keyboard layout, keep the US layout as default, and then you can use "alt + shift" to switch between the two.

; -> ö
' -> ä
[ -> å

Whenever I'm back in the states, the first thing I do is install the finnish layout.

hmmm in order to be able to type in Japanese, there's something called global ime... I mean, in order to type in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Greek, Hindi, Russian, etc... and there's an option for Finnish too...

This site has some pictures so you can see how it looks like...
It's a small blue square on the bottom right of your screen, and once you add the languages you wanna type (Japanese, Korean, Finnish, etc) you just have to click on the square and select the language. Once you select Finnish, you'll have letter ö right next to letter l and letter ä right next to letter ö.

I hope that helps...
if everybody already knew about that for ages... then anteeksi!

Alternatively, you could use an “international” version of either the US or the UK keyboard layout (both versions ship with Windows) or create a custom keyboard layout which is just like the one you’re accustomed to but with the letters Ä and Ö behind easily accessible AltGr combinations of your own choosing. See this old post for more information.
