Interview then what next?

Post by userface » Tue Jan 08, 2008 6:20 pm

I had an interview this afternoon for an IT position. It is an entry-level job. Anyway, after answering all the questions, the interviewer told me that they will contact me after they interview all the applicants. That's basically two weeks. The whole interview lasted for 20-30 minutes.

Now the question.

is it a bad sign that the interviewers tell that i will be contacted after two weeks and wait for their call? they said that they still need to interview another set of applicants, does this subliminally mean i may not get the work or is this the process of employing here in finland?

i am so confused.

Difficult to say!! so be calm, take a break or do other interviews and keep applying for jobs..
Keep your expectations very low and your hopes very high!!
Generally, it is a process that they go through and will select some more for another round to be interviewed by a bigger and wider audience..
If you dont hear from them after 2 weeks, politely call them to "check" the status and ask them if they have already selected another candidate..
Good Luck!!

mhm, I'm not in the same field and there were more than one vacancies for the job I applied for, but they told me the same in the interview and they indeed did call back and I did get the job. So at least it's not necessarily a bad sign, I'd say.

They have multiple applicants for position, imagine that. They have picked some they feel might be good for position for first screening and will now go through ALL selected applicants to see which ones best suit their needs.

You may go through second and even third round before getting a job.

What did you expect? That they just know you are better than all other selected applicants and be hired right away without interviewing the rest?

Can't say it's good sign, can't say it's bad.

I once got invitation to interview a long time after making application and time to apply closing. At that point I also received job offer from another company which I accepted so I have no idea how it would have gone. So better not jump to any conclusions.

1. "IT and multiple applicants" is very unlikely.

2. Don't expect quick response. It could be number of reasons: expecting decision from a manager, consulting with other team members, finally decision making person could be sick, on vacation or at travel.
Once, I waited answer for two weeks, as HR clerk was sick.

3. After week of waiting you could give them a call.

Meantime, look for other places. It is never late.

Not true necessarily. Entry level jobs can have much applicants since there are many eager programmers who want jobs but few want to hire.

thanks for replies. keep 'em coming. :)

I am surely hopeful to be considered for the job. But like raamv said, I don't have high expectations as I know there will be many applicants applying for the position. I would just wanted some advice regarding how the interview went since it is my first time to get a job interview. As I was thinking how interviews and application process really go, what the interviewers look for the applicants, and so on. I remembered that I stutter a lot because I am really nervous.

Is is better to mention the interest on position or the company? I did talk alot about the interest in the company rather than the position (I am more interested about the company although I mentioned that I am also interested to learn some skills and I had done something like it in the past).

Thank you for all advice.

Hello,

Well, I think it depends a lot of the company : if they just want somebody for the job, you should speak a bit more about the job, if they want to recruit somebody to make career in the company, if you speak more about them it could be better. But I think you did great of speaking more of the company, it proves that you really want to work for them :)

Can't tell. I'm not your interviewer. But I guess you have not heard from them?
Did you try, once, contact them back?

i haven't heard from them yet. I hope they call me to have a good news for me.

anyway, i had an interview again. well not quite of an interview since we only talked for about 10 mins. He complimented my CV but then decided not to pursue my application since I don't speak finnish, or so he said, "your finnish is not good and we want fluent finnish speaker." It was funny since I put in my cv that I have basic finnish then i thought so why did he bother to meet me if he wanted fluent finnish speaker. anyway, that was it. the interview was early in the morning. maybe he just wanted me to wake up really early.

but then he said that he would forward my cv to other companies that need english speakers. May i ask, what are the chances for this? or he just said it out of respect? I am really bad with these kinds of subliminal messages.

No no no, you got it all wrong. Theres loads of people here who just decided to move to a Nowheremäki and got a job the same day and haven't learned any Finnish. See now this scenario what you describe is totally impossible.

Depends, if it was a recruiting agency (process outsourced) probability is higher than if its some company y themselves.
Cheers, Hank W.

well, actually it was. he had my cv in both finnish (a colleague helped me to translate it) and english. he also interviewed me in finnish. then we shifted back to english and told me that my finnish is poor and could not help me because bosses want fluent finnish speakers. but he would send my cv to other companies. I don't really know if he is from a recruiting agency (maybe he is. hmm). anyway, he just told me that he would get in contact if other companies respond to my cv.

I just posted you a long reply userface, it appeared as a duplicate posting, so I deleted one, then the board went haywire, froze and the post seems to have vanished now. I hope you had time to read it before it went :) I don't have time to fart around writing it again. Anyway, good luck to you!
