Looking for a Job

Post by marika_a » Sun Jan 27, 2008 2:16 am

Hi,

I am looking for a job in Finland where I can:
a) Use my English skills
b) Use my University degree. Psychology and Professional Writing & Communication
c) Be a full Time or at least seasonal working
d) Improve my Finnish

What I would like to do is go into advertising/marketing/communications.

I am a Finnish-Canadian. I speak Finnish and English fluently, though my written Finnish is slow and halting (probably because I haven't read a lot of Finnish).

I have been examining jobs in Finland and find myself at a loss as to figuring out what I could do (mainly because of my slow and halting reading abilities).

I am also unsure if I should submit my resume is Finnish or in English, my Cover Letter is in Finnish however.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated :)

Thanks all!

Marika :D

I have read the stickies, I have also done most of what is suggested on them as well as having asked relatives that live in Finland.

I am looking for more suggestions.

Interesting dilemma. The thing is then what kind of a job you fit in. I presume you are a dual citizen? Because then there isn't the trouble trying to convince you got some extraordinary ability that nobody in the EU can do. Problem is still to convince someone to hire you ;)

Something in corporate communications in a big international maybe?

Yes, I'm a dual citizen :)

And on the plus side I have a lot of relatives all over Finland, so not even the location of the job is a dilemma, it's just finding and getting one.

I have applied at Nokia and Outokumpo, though I have to admit it is a little nerve racking applying to the bigger companies. (I know all about the humbleness/no-bragging thing, having been raised on it, though I also have Canadian/American side combating it :P)

Finding a job in Finland often goes through networking. Use your relatives (and their friends).

if you have good English, you could try to seek technical writer or PR job. See for example, here.

I would submit all parts of the application in Finnish. I have this hunch that all the positive aspects of your application, like native English skills and "international experience" etc. can only "shine" when they also know that you're fluent in Finnish, and the first hint to this fact for them will be your all-Finnish-application.

(But then I have no clue about job hunting in that specific field you're aiming at.)

check on mol.fi, ECHA is recruiting a communication assistant and other secretaries through manpower and opteam. You could ask for about 2000 euro/months depending on your background... be quick they are in a hurry :)

And its not a problem if you write slow. Most people hiring don't read fast

It is difficult to find a job and at times may be boring and time consuming. One of the best ways to find jobs is through your personal contacts such as friends, family and faculty. You can also go in person to offices to inquire about job openings. Search on various search engines such as careerbuilder, yahoo hotjobs, monster, craigslist etc.It is also good to register with top placement agencies.
