quick question: Eiran aikuislukio

Post by zeroism » Thu Jan 31, 2008 12:26 am

Hi everyone, I'm new.

I have read a great deal about studying in Finland in general, but some things are unclear to me. I am from the US and am interested in staying in Finland for a few reasons, including studying. After reading some information on this forum, I decided it might be a good idea to look into applying to Eiran aikuislukio, since of course I want to study Finnish. However, it seems from what I'm reading that I could not be granted a residence permit in order to attend this school since it's a high school? Am I correct in assuming that?

I'm just looking for the best option for studying. I've completed high school here (quite a while ago), but I do not have the language skills required to study in Finnish, though I would like to study at a Finnish university in the future. Right now all I'm really asking is the question above about that school, but if you have anything else I'm open to it. I've found plenty of information on my own otherwise. I just want to try to give myself more options for studying there by learning the language first or finding a program which allows me to do both at once, and this school seems like a good option for me. And yes, I do fully understand how difficult the language is. I've been studying Japanese for 9 years on my own, so I'm thoroughly familiar with the difficulties of studying a language that is entirely alien to a native English speaker.

Thanks in advance.

Well, then find a polytechnic with some line of study that interests you, and once you're here hog onto the Finnish courses.

I think you should call/email Eira aikuislukio and ask them yourself. They will know FIRST HAND whether any of their foreign students managed to get visas and what the procedure is. I have heard some good reports of Eira's Finnish foreign language programme.

The Polytechnics are also a good solution and the choice of English courses is increasing all the time.

But don't forget, you will have to support yourself while you study and finding work is very difficult.

The thing with "Finnish bureaucracy" is... I said this to someone:

"The conformity of purpose is achieved by the mutual satisfaction of requirements."

The main thing to remember, as with all bureaucracy (but especially KELA) is:
a) you want them and what they give more than they want you and what you give.
b) you read the papers and think, they read the papers and think - differently.
c) their want and their think is bigger than your want and your think.
Cheers, Hank W.
