No, Finnish is caught from osmosis. You see little kids standing in the puddles in kindergarten, and in a few weeks they're fluent. Sometimes you get a case of bad grammar and you get green slang coming out from the nose.

oops, sorry, you're right they are both the official languages :S i actually was typing faster than i was thinking because the dude i was responding to was being ignorant to me so i was a bit frustrated, got a little scatter brainedCory wrote:Technically speaking, one should say that English and French are the official languages of Canada! Not one is first and the other 2nd!Krista wrote:In Canada our first language is English, second language French. In all public schools its mandatory to learn French from grade 4-6. We also have French Immersion schools in Canada but they don't teach the English language, so I have no idea how they do things in Finland, whether they teach Finnish or not?????
I attended an immersion school in North Vancouver and English is indeed a language that was (and still is) taught. It wasn't an elective language, it was/is compulsory. You may have meant to say that most of the courses in the immersion schools are taught in French. We have to be able to read and write both languages to enter a university.

i thought that French immersion meant that everything is taught only in French?

Thank you! I really appreciate your helpCory wrote:Take a look at virtual.finland.fi Lots of info in there.Krista wrote:Are there any English schools in Finland that aren't private or don't cost an arm and a leg??
Please do a keyword search on this site. Tons and tons of these types of questions have been raised already in the past years.
You will get some silly answers to questions (not necessarily silly, but redundant for the one's who've been on the forum a long time) so if after reading all you can about the questions you've raised, then ask the questions.
There are English schools, bilingual Eng/Fin and Finnish schools here. Please do a "search" for some info.
Also a questions easily found in the above URL or on this site but the answer is 7 for compulsory primary school, 6 for half-day non-compulsory kindergarten/preschool.Krista wrote:Also, what age does school begin in Finland?

Re: School for English speaking children
I think you whoever's looking for teaching in English in the Metropolitan Area will find the below City of Helsinki page quite useful:
Teaching in English in the Metropolitan Area comprehensive schools for age 5 to 15
Teaching in English in upper secondary schools in the Metropolitan Area for age 15 to 18
