In the same way as you are "wrong" or "right" calling "Deutsch" German, "Francais" French and "Nederlands" Dutch.

Yep, it's Suomi (or suomi, without the capital s if we talk about the langugage - in Finnish, you write tämä teksti on englanniksi - this text is in English)

There's no consensus on what the etymology of the word Suomi is - some say it derives from the word suo (marsh/swamp/bog), others have presented more complicated, loan-word explanations... see http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomi#Nimi

I'm a Finn - olen suomalainen (IIRC the song's Italian originally, though  )

First things first... It’s spelled suomi, not soumi. :)

For Finnish-speakers, Suomi is the name of the country and suomi is the name of the language. (Note the difference in capitalization. Names of languages are not capitalized in Finnish... except at the beginning of a sentence, of course.)

For Swedish-speakers, Finland is the name of the country and finska is the name of the language.

For German-speakers, the name of the country is Finnland and the language is called Finnisch.

The Frenchmen call the country Finlande and the language finnois.

English-speakers call it... get the idea? :)

Unnh, most people I know say "ylimielinen kusipää" and "kusela" for instances like this. And I'd definitely say
they're not wrong

Sorry, I think you misunderstood me - no sarcasm intended. The "you" I used referred to the impersonal you as in "people in general".

So, as Jukka already pointed out, Suomi is the name of the country and the language in Finnish, while Finnish and Finland are the names of the language and country respectively in English.

The origins of the word “suomi” are a bit muddled. There’s no certainty of what it means... or would have meant, back in prehistoric times. There are theories about the etymology, of course, but for a modern-day native speaker, “suomi” is “just a name”... for both the country and the language.

thats just odd i guess, its like all the other countries in the world are calling your country Finland basically

and you call it Suomi.

if anyone came to the US, and called it umm..... Birdland or something, I would really be shocked.

so do you prefer to be called Suomi respectively ?

soooooo meeee is that how it is pronounced, I learn something everyday, i might as well get this all right

I just wanna know my s**t if you know what i mean, when i visit

If you are speaking Finnish you call it Suomi, if not, you call it what ever it is in the language you are speaking at the time.
