Watter supply in Finland

Hello,
I´m doing a study for my faculty about water supply systems, and i heard that the water supply market is liberalised in Finland. Can you please tell me more about this? Does this liberalised market means that one who lives in Finland can choose the water company to supply water to his home? How does this work? Does all the different water companies providing this service in the same area have their own water distribution network and pipelines?

Your help would be much appreciated.

??? Electricity market is liberalized... water you can dig your own well unless you want to join the municipal waterworks...
and in electricity you pay a separate fee for the juice and for the transfer...

Ok, but it´s possible to dig wells in small cities, or country houses. In Helsinki, for instance, if i live in ten floor building, what are my choices? I can only be served with tap water by the municipal waterworks, or is there any other option, like another municipal waterworks, or water supply company?

Municipal waterworks is the only choice. I cannot see how anything else would even be possible when the same pipes feed the whole house.

buy water bottles from a supermarket... I'm sure they're used to that in Nokia...

Of course you can have a different supplier of water. I hope you have an elevator (lift for my English friends) because those bottles get heavy after a while.

It was exactky to try to clarify that very strange possibility, that i posted in the Finland Forum!

Maybe, the liberalised market, applies to the shareholders of the Municipal waterworks. Can anyone explain me if these "companies" can be either publicly owned, stately owned and/or privately owned, in such way that the "water market" is liberalised to all kind of investors?

As far as I know all the water companies are owned by the respective municipalities. The finnish word for this type of company is "liikelaitos". See for example Helsingin Vesi website http://www.helsinginvesi.fi/index.asp?i ... e=2&klik=4
