How does your Bathroom look...

Post by hychamaz » Thu Feb 28, 2008 9:15 pm

I hope that I can get some feedback here as we just had a bathroom re-done and one part looks really bad to me. On the wall where our shower is, we have a one foot section of wall that comes out then makes a 90 degree bend. So in other words we have a 90 degree bend that faces you. In every bathrrom that I remember ever seeing (and see on the web) you have bullnose tiles. These make a nice rounded edge tiles so that you dont have 1 tile perpendiculiar to another. This is what they did though. One tile is at a 90 degree bend to the other, so you actually see the unfinished side part of the tile. The guy told us that this is how they do it in Finland. I cant believe this. Thanks in advance.

Well if you are a poor person then yes. You get what yiou pay for. Bullnose tiles... hrm... they are special order so as to match them with the cheap sh* tiles... if you look close enough you see the inkblots? I've been thinking of using them at the cottage as I need to redo my shower floor as it got shagged, but they cost 5 euro a piece on sale...

Hank is right! you will have to spend a bit to get those tiles, but thats not what you want to here as the job is done!. a simple and cheap answer is to match the colour silicon you have and run a bead of it up the corner and that will hide the rough edge. plus that courner will not be water proof and over time water will get in so you will have to seal it now or spend later!.. good luck! well, I had my bathroom done 9 months ago and I have plastic rounded lists on the corners. Looks good and is probably cheaper.

Reminds me of when Puustelli did our kitchen (I won't say how much it cost but I still don't think we really got what we paid for). Anyway, there were quite a few "issues" and I remember my husband (Finnish) losing his temper on the phone to them and the reply was.... "tell your wife her kitchen meets normal Finnish standards" end of conversation.

The problem is that a lot of people are not very fussy/demanding and few ever complain. I know shoddy when I see it - and so do you apparently. I still stub my toe on the floor tiles....

As the wall is next to the shower then putting an L shape strip over the edge won't work. And plastic edging (lists? beading?) has to go UNDER the tiles so it is too late for that. I guess silicon is the only answer but don't use white because it never stays nice. Grey is a better choice.

We have a bathroom that needs the full monty and I am dreading it....

Thats the way its done over here. Acceptable by the building codes. But it can't be left like that. The edges have to be finished with either silicone as Penelpe mentioned, plastic edging like what Mccowboy had done, but that had to done during installation. Or you can use acrylic caulking and paint over it with the wall paint. If done properly, the painted acrylic caulking has an acceptable appearance, just like the proper tiles do.

Cost really wasnt the issue at all. We would have gladly paid 5 a tile or whatever since it is just one corner running from the floor to the ceiling. I think that it really looks terrible as opposed to being prone to ever leak. One piece is flush to the wall with the other 90 degrees to it with grout mortar in between lik eth eother tiles. (let me get a picture up) I really agree that possibly most people I guess dont complain here. My wife is trying to calm me down before the boss of the company comes over tommorow morning to look at our complaints. And believe me this was supposed to be a great Finnish company that has done most of the bathrooms in our row house complex of 30+. I guess maybe the only option will be to ask him about putting a bead of silicone down the tiles. But I am guessing that the store is probably all sold out of this silicone as the tile guy used enough to fill all of the corners where he cut the tiles too short and crooked and tried to cover it up with the stuff... Not to mention the plumber who used enough around the toilet (smeared with his thumb and looks terrible) to keep the Titanic afloat. Or should I mention halfway around the sink that the guy forgot to silicone I guess because it was a little difficult to get to and he thought no one would notice. Or should I mention the ceiling that looks horribly painted. Or the light switch that wobbles in the wall. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I just would really think that with the 18 guys that it took to do the bathroom, since one guy oversees another on each aspect, plumbers, electricians, tilers, demolition men, painters, the inspectors, the management company coming in every so often to take a look, etc. etc. that it would be perfect.
Anymore feedback on these tiles would also be appreciated. I am looking at one website now that says "use a bullnose to create that finished professional look". God my blood pressure is going up by the second.

While I've defended the high quality of Finnish Workmanship here several times, the simple truth is that for almost half a year now I've been doing nothing but repair work on new houses and one of them isn't even finished. With this building boom, the good workers are too far and few between and there is a lot of junk out there now, sad to say. Anyway it looks like I'm going to busy for awhile.

Here is a picture of the tile. First note the terrible visible edge of the tile wher eI would have liked the bullnose. Also look to the left of it and see how crooked the guy cut the tile in the back corner and stuffed it with silicone. :x

If its not sloppy siliconing, I'd replace the badly cut tile and once again use latex acrylic caulking where the bullnose should be, and paint the the caulking with the paint colour. If thats the corner you took a pic of the edge of the tile, then unfortunately only some kind of coner bead trimis the only solution. You can actually get some nice ones, eg chrome, similiar colour.
Once again looking at the pic, you could just paint the offending orange part with paint that has a colour identical to the tiles.

Thanks for the response. This is just one example of how badly the tile was cut. There are many others cut the same and worse. So this definately is not something I should just live with would you say (not to mention the other dozen things wrong in the bathroom)? Are they going to really b.tch and moan about this or can they actually replace all of the tiles along the corners. Hopefully the boss will be shocked at his workers work when he comes tommorow. Thanks again.
P.S.- I guess that the caulking will not have to be painted since it is already pre-colored, called ice blue??

Depends on what kind of agreement you have etc., but I have seen brand new WC's torn down because a sample of the waterproofing barries was too thin, after the fact. Ceramic tiles replaced because of fracionally poor alignment. Brand new floors replaced because the appliance installers rolled a fridge on them causing minor minor tracks etc. Let the first round begin.

you need to approve the work, as long as you don't they need to keep negotiating with you.

PS. I'd be more worried about that image on the mirror... :ochesey:
