Good bike shop in Helsinki/Espoo?

Post by jas_rho » Mon Mar 17, 2008 10:53 am

Hey now that spring is coming and new bike models are coming out, I was thinking to try and get a deal on a bike from last years model list.

Does anyone have some recommendations on some places to get a decent bike for a decent price? Thanks!

Depends what you mean by "decent" bike and "decent" price. Biltema has "decent" bikes at very "decent" prices but if you what something hi-end then try places like Bike Planet (Friisilä/Olari) which has a pro selection and lots of customers but the prices are challenging to say the least (not sure about last year's models though).

Ok good point. Well I want a good "pro" bike where its really gonna get used. I would spend somewhere around 500€ give or take a little. Basically I am looking for shops that specifically deal with bikes. Not other things like power tools and paper plates :D

Not sure you'll get a pro bike for 500€ in Bike Planet (they charged us 80€ to fix a wheel) but good luck! Don't be afraid to haggle, it sometimes works, even in Finland. Anyway, the car park is usually pretty full.... hmmmm--- is that a good sign or bad... :?:

Yeah I am not afraid to bargain at all. I don't really need a super pro bike but I had seen last year some bikes that were normally 1000€+ selling for 400-700€ but now I have moved to this area and don't know the good shops that give the best deals. I mean now that the new season is starting and these places have some old models in stock still, I am just hoping to get a better deal.

Just about all shops should have some of last years stock hanging around still.
What would help with the advice giving is if you said what kind of bike you wanted (i'm guessing road) and maybe even what brand(s) you had in mind.
However i must say that you might be a bit late on getting the bargains, the sales pretty much started last year!

I just drove past Bike Planet in Olari and they must've received a huge delivery as there were bikes piled high in the car park. I guess the next 3-4 weeks are peak bike selling season down here in the south.

I'd say it's that way everywhere, most shops i've been to lately have had lots of stock on the floor.
Prices on some bikes have gone up markedly, i'm pretty sure that 1 speed Jopo's were going for 299e last year and this year they are 339e!
I was thinking about buying one to use as my 'wife speed' bike, that way i wouldn't have to hear her complain about me going so fast.

Anyone want 30 bikes for 3000e?
http://www.ridefree.fi/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30681

I also came across a guy on Huuto.net recently who has a large supply of bicycle parts and gear. His parents used to own a shop in Turku and he has bought/inherited the leftover stock from the now defunct shop. If anyone wants or needs anything, i could pass on his email address.
I bought a new old stock seatpost and seat from him and can vouch for the guy. :D

I am not sure what you mean by pro bike, There are so many differnt kinds of bicycles for so many different kinds of riding. What style of riding are you considering getting into?
Road cycling, Touring, Mountain Biking, Cycle Cross, Track, City Riding? How much do you plan to be riding?

Just for the sake of giving you some info here, I am going to give you a quick summary of what I think is your best option.

You are going to want to go into a bike shop and tell the customer service guy exactly what you are wanting to do with the bike, what type of riding your looking to do, how much your planning to ride. You will want to see if they can fit you to a bike, the more comprehensive the fitting the better. Every measurement matters. When you have done that ask them to show you some of their bikes which they feel will suit you.

Take that info and maybe look online for a used bike which has good parts and a good frame thats in your price range ( If the bike shop can't offer you a bike in your price range)
then you could take the bike you bought for a tune up at the shop.

just an idea. If you want to talk about this more you can pm me if you want

this is referring to mtb....

there's bike planet and system 1 in Puhos...that's right across from Itäkeskus.

bike planet carries Trek and GT bikes..and Bianchi...i saw a nice GT Avalanche 1.0 2007 hardtail for arnd 700eu...this is with all round hydraulic disc brakes and shimano deore/deore LX shifter/deraileur combos

System 1 has even more serious stuffs...like Cannondales.....

I think there's another one along Mannerheimintie...Kauppaveljet ...they have a lot of Kona-s

Velo Sport a stone throw away from Amer building....is that Mäkelankatu...they have more roadbikes.

i'd avoid suomenpolkkupyörä at all cost......they like to overcharge because they think you dont have a choice but to get it from them.

I was just wondering how this ended up? as I will be in Helsinki/ Espoo in a few weeks looking for a commuter/ trail ride bike. what was the best place or should I just order one off Chain Reaction Cycles in the UK? I am looking to spend as little as possible and would even accept v-brakes...Is there are any trails near Espoo?
