Paimio chair - Alvar Aalto

Post by Rosamunda » Fri Apr 11, 2008 12:30 am

There is a poster (French documentary film maker) on http://www.sudfinlande.net looking for amateur home movies (Super 8 kind of thing) of Finnish family interiors... featuring soft furnishings and anything Artek especially the famous Paimio chair. The chair was designed in the late 1930s so I guess he is looking for any films made 1940 to present day.

I'm not sure the Paimio chair featured a lot in private homes (IMO more likely to be found in public buildings) but I might be wrong.

Here's a pic (the curvy wooden chair on the left):

No, you are not wrong, it was a "public furniture". When I lived in student housing (no such thing as one person room in those days) we had that in the corner of the room. But I remember one private Paimio: My aunt had one in 1950´s. I remember it because my mother didn´t like it. My aunt was a single mother of two, and always had huge financial problems. My guess is that she got the chair free from somewhere. Funny to think now, it costs A LOT in auctions.

The problem is "amateur home movies". I don´t remember anybody having a movie camera. Heck, most people didn´t even have regular cameras.

Yes, I asked my husband and he said the same (a) "people" didn't buy Artek furniture in those days and (b) we didn't have an indoor bathroom, let alone a movie camera!

Does anyone know if Paimio Sanatorium still exists or what it was turned into.... hotel?

Nah. it's part of Turku General these days. TYKS

I mean, "Nah, not a hotel". But it's still around.

Look simply like a toy.... Maybe designed by someone at Bauhaus.

I am the one who posted the thread mentionned above.

Actually we are pretty conscious that The Paimio armchair wasn't part of popular furnitures, and having it on the videos would only be a bonus. I guess the will of the director is to evocate the idea of Finnish "home".. but it may be a misinterpretation to evocate it. I'll have to check this with him as this wasn't in our original script. It's a recent request, and a quite urgent one as we have already started the editing.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

one last precision: the films don't NEED to be in super 8, even if it could be better.

Finns would have had *film cameras* in the 1940-1960 period when you had even coffee rationed until 1952...

Look simply like a toy....

It says something .... ång in the texts in the exhibit catrds underneath. As you can see theres a knob that forbids the thing to be moved. I'd say without better knowlege its a magazine rack... has no functionality as serving nor toy.
