Finnish Art

Post by Susan » Thu Apr 10, 2008 3:03 pm

There should be a place for the Finnish Art and the Writing group threads somewhere else and not all mixed with the lasagna but well . . . It just makes me hungry, lol

Who can tell me about good Finnish artists who can be representatives of the Finnish Art in an Art group?
I tried to search on the Internet but I didn't find anything.

Any ideas where can I find information? Should the art museums and galleries would be the place to go?
I would like to find something online too.

Any Finnish artists on the forum?

You could try this page for starters... http://www.artists.fi/english/index.html (Artists' Association of Finland) - also see http://www.kuvataiteilijamatrikkeli.fi/ ... nglish.htm and http://www.taiteenkeskustoimikunta.fi/ (Arts Council of Finland)... and why not indeed pop into galleries and muesums as well :)

http://www.galleriat.net/ (<- for some reason the different language versions won't work?)

Thanks, Sammy! =)

See? Now we can discuss cannelloni and Finnish Art at the same time, lol
It can be useful to have all the threads that interest me together in the same section after all.

That first link you sent me seems to be really interesting. I can go and visit the place on Iso Roobertinkatu too.
I have to check the second one. And yes, I'll go and do a little research in the art galleries and art museums.

What do you expect to find in Finnish art museums and art galleries, if not art from Finnish artists?

I knew you had some information H!
Where and when do the "hobby artists" have the exhibitions? Interesting. Very interesting.
Well, now I have two exhibitions scheduled to go from young Finnish artists.
I will post the information here soon, in case there's someone interested.

'The original paintings of Finnish artist Ruth Manttari, including the autographed limited edition Farscape paintings, set to the music of Nightwish's song "Death Makes An Artist" (Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan) from their "Once" Album. Ruth not only has had gallery showings of her art, but her work has also been published.'

A new gallery focused on only comic art has opened recently in Helsinki as well.

Of course, we have to mention Aleksi Gallen-Kallela....of Kalevale fame....but the breadth of his work is fascinating....

Here's a non-Kalevala image....Akka ja kissa...1885:

And as I said before I can see a lot of him in the paintings of Canada's Group of Seven....although he was somewhat contemporary with them, he was quite a bit older, so I would think he and the Kalevala imagery must have had some inspirational impact on these Canadian artists.... (....particularly his landscape works)

Helvi Mustonen is a living artist...I was looking at some of her imagery...it's very dark and foreboding, but it does kind of draw you in.....

Kamppailu..."Struggle"...is that the best translation???... :)

....and I find the images of Reidar Särestöniemi appealing...

That sounds interesting. Thanks for the link.
Too bad they don't have the site in English too. Have you been there?

I personally find Hugo Simberg's work captivating. I also love Aleksi Gallen-Kallela. The Retretti ARt Centre in Punkaharju is a real treat to visit if you get the chance.
