English speaking autokatsastus (car inspection) in Tampere?

Post by jaro » Tue Apr 15, 2008 6:22 pm

Do you know of any car inspection place in Tampere where workers speak good English? They always seem to find some problem on my car and I think one of the reasons might be that I'm not able to oppose them while they are doing the inspection. It's always some small detail that they find. The point is that I have to book time in service to fix the issue and come back for the inspection. It also costs me money.

I'm tired of it and I'm looking for a place where I could discuss with the inspection guys. Do you guys know of such a place in Tampere?

First of many examples when learning Finnish provides with a pecuniary reward.

Oh, and word of advice...

Opposing those guys too much might not be beneficial. While things have improved compared to days of my father when inspector was next from god, upwards, they still have very much the authority to fail your car.

This is Finland, land of rules. Obey them. Opposing them or trying to bribe your way through them will get you neckdeep in crap.

I have never even spoken to my inspectors and cars have gone through A-OK (ok, had to change those lamps once since I had been lazy bastard but that did not fail me). Perhaps your car just is accident waiting to happen? Just drop it at one of those "no time reservation required"-places and wait.

My car is 9 years old and I think it's in pretty good shape. I've never had to repair it during the last 4 years (except when katsastus guys told me so, which is every year). I'm all for safety of the cars and if there is something really wrong I won't object and have it repaired asap. But when the guy tells me that some bottom part seems to be a little bit more greasy than it should be and I have to come back again, I'm starting to be suspicious.

Yeah, car business is one of the fields where you really need Finnish. I almost got scammed when I was buying a used car.

Are you (a) trying to save money or (b) just interested in getting your car to pass?

If it's (a) and you have not had any repairs in 4 years on a 9 year old car, then it's no surprise that the inspection guys keep spotting problems. Discussion is not going to fix your car, if there is a fault, then it is a fault. Talking won't fix it.

If it is (b) then the easiest approach (though not the cheapest) is to get your car serviced and then put it through Katsastus. The Ford dealer we use will even take it to the inspection for us and if there are any problems which Ford have not already fixed before the test (so far there have not been), then Ford will tend to them, take the car back for re-inspection etc.
