Where do you go when you break a leg or something?

I actually have no idea! Do you first need to go and see the doc. at your terveysasema/keskus or can you just go in some trauma clinic?

I sprained my ankle at work today and while I can put my foot on the floor I can't really put my weight on it anymore so I might have injured something. I was thinking of waiting til tomorrow morning to see if it hurts the same or has swollen during the night and if so get a doctor to check it.

Anybody knows what is the way to do this kind of things? It's definitely not broken, but I'm looking for some kind of A&E department. In France I could just walk in the A&E and have it checked there.

I hope I'm understandable as I don't think I make much sense here...

When I broke leg I went to Ensiapu (here in Jyväskylä Ensiapu ja Keskussairala in one place).. Well "Ensiapu", but still had to wait for 12 (!!!!) hours for cast....

When we break things we go to Jorvi A&E in Espoo. Not sure about Helsinki, but you could call the (09) 10023 terveysneuvonta number which is a 24/7 helpline for health for the whole of the capital region. They can tell you where to go and what to do. I think 10023 is a private number so you pay for the call but on the blurb it says "tavallisen puhelun hinnalla".

Thanks for the hint. I think Töölö is the place dealing with traumatology so it might be there. I'll wait for my husband to come home to call then. It seems I can't spend a pregnancy without hurting that ankle!

I think that helpline number is OK in English too.

Thanks for your help! We tried the helpline yesterday but were stuck in the queue for a long time so we gave up. Eventually we went to the terveysasema this morning and the doctor managed to see us briefly. She was worried about bone damage as I hurt where it shouldn't. There's definitely ligament damage though. They cannot take xray due to me being 25 weeks pregnant. So I'm now with crushes and boy oh boy ain't it hard to walk with those when you are 6 months pregnant!

If you are in Helsinki, try your hardest to get to the main surgical hospital in Töölö. I was taken to a non-surgical hospital that really wasnt set up for trauma. I waited for 5 or so hours with my ankle broken in three places before they even got me any pain meds....They then put the cast on wrong, had to cut it off then do it again. It turned out they shouldnt have put me in a cast and a week later I had surgery at Töölö.
