Probably the CV joint is shot.

If you have the time, then I can thoroughly recommend my local in Masala, you could either bring it out and wait or use the train station to get back into Helsinki. The train station is 5 minutes walk from the shop.

He changed front suspension springs for 80 euro and fitted a new muffler for 25 euro - both around half of what I was expecting.

Thats actually a very good sales point. Usually the good & cheap shops are tucked away in the most obscure places, and getting there and away is an ordeal... even if you have them in the city they're "at the end of the road" in some industrial area you have to walk for a while to find the nearest bus stop to get anywhere.

I guess it's the same everywhere....I've been going to the same independent BMW repair shop for years...I'm fairly knowledgable about cars ...in the past I would often fix things myself if it didn't require a lot of specialized tools...now I typically can't be "arsed"...but almost always I know what the problem is before the car goes to the shop.... The dealerships...the honest ones... tend to "go by the book"....the independents ...again, the honest ones...tend to fix what needs fixing.... But the honest independents can be hard to find...usually it's "word of mouth"...

In the end it's your choice, I guess...If you feel better "going by the book", then that's the route...I don't .....So I save lots of money by just getting fixed what needs fixing... :)
