Question for footie fans.

Post by littlefrank » Sun Apr 27, 2008 10:08 am

I'm not a great fan of football, but I keep an eye on the results of the teams my friends support. But last week I noticed that Hearts had 45 points and Aberdeen had 44 points yet Aberdeen were above Hearts in the table, thinking this was a mistake that would be rectified, I looked again yesterday and Aberdeen are still ahead in the table and still 1 point behind Hearts. :?

Well spotted.

What happens is, the league is split after 33 matches (when every club has played every other club three times) and teams stay within top six or bottom six regardless of points won.

The teams then play five matches against the other teams in their half of the table. So you can have a situation, as you pointed out, that has the seventh-placed team with a higher points total than sixth (especially as the seventh-placed team's last five fixtures are easier).

I think this was a way of cutting down the number of matches played (from 44 down to 38).
