For many it's the first outdoor drinking festival of the year.

Some other people go for a Vappu drive.

Some towns have a parade.

First "cruising" night you try to get your tucked-away treasures for a round... problem is downtown usually gets packed with people. The next morning might be hazardous too...

Anyways, I've got Vappu plans set... I'm going to the cottage to change the outhouse door... maybe even paint the outhouse inside and fix the seat... s*t job but someone got to do it.
Cheers, Hank W.

You get in your car with friends/family and drive around just for the sake of it.

Where in Finland do you live? That might help people point you to more specific activities.

See the last year’s discussion on the same topic: “What are you guys doing for Vappu?

It is like Stocka "Hullut Päivät" - needs to be experienced once so you can make up your mind if you like it or not.

Basically, like all Finnish holidays the "party" is on the "eve".... the Students have taken over, so you'll se a lot of white caps around with a variety of tassles and tassle-free. Don't be laughing - they're a part of the Imperial University uniform, so a professor might come and whack you with his sword. The main thing in Helsinki is "capping the Manta" done around 18 at Kauppatori. the centre (kauppatori/senate square) will be jampacked with people in a party mood. So anybody claiming "Finns this" "Helsinki that" can go there and witness why the rest of the year is so sombre.

On Vappu "Day" the tradition is to go have a picknick in Kaivopuisto. Again, the city works roll their eyes thinking of the lawn (this year being dry it should be quite allright). Or if you're politically inclined you can go to Hakaniemi and listen to the speeches and see the few leftover commies march with their banners singing the international.

Well, thats Helsinki, each city has its own "thing to do".

Yes, and if you're inclined to whine about drunken people on the street, flowing yellow rivers or pavement pizzas - don't go to town, as thats what it reads on the package... flipside is people can be "really friendly" though with the temperature going to be hot, theres going to be a lot of people and all kinds of people... and forget getting home by public transport unless you exactly know what will be going and when.... this is one of those "need to plan three months before" cases. But definitely if you've never been out to Helsinki on Vappu you should - just for the experience.

I am not sure about the time, but I believe that it is around 4 when Havis Amanda (the statue at the end of Esplanadi) gets her student cap. So that is where you should be Vappu Eve around 4.

And next morning you should pack something to eat and drink . Then go to Ullanlinnanmäki and listen to some singing and brass music. And then drift to Kaivopuisto park for a picnic.

Unless I'd scheduled outhouse renewal I'd volunteered... someone local introduce N. to Vappu properly? Mark I?
(someone volunteering to 3 days in the boonies with drunk Finnish-Estonian white trash can sign up too  )

I was lucky living in Finland. Every year got invited to share Vappu with friends. First year turned up at 5pm. Waste of time they were all wrecked, senseless and past anything. Next year went at 2pm..SAME. Next year went for lunch at 12 noon. Still too bloody late they were all pissed and beyond anything but laughing (as only drunks can laugh) and drinking even more. Final year invited everyone for a BBQ at 6pm, and never prepared anything because I knew they would never make it. :D :D :D

I think the quiet of the boonies, a certain amount of solitude and a few bottles is a good choice, unless you can get to the big 3 cities to watch Finnish SHellllibrrrratshunssss :beer_yum: :beer_yum: :beer_yum: :beer_yum:
I do not need to know you will attend my Funeral. I would rather you call just to say Hi !!

Onko Marsilaiset tänne laskeutuneet,
vai mikä tuo olio on joka minun sängyssä makailee?
Hirveän lehmän kotiini hilasin
sillä mä perkele vappuni pilasin
hirveän lehmän kotiini hilasin
ja maineeni myös menetin
