PS3 questions

Post by imneverdrinkingagain » Wed May 07, 2008 10:03 pm

I want to buy a PS3 but have only just discovered that only the trimmed down 40GB version of the console is now available, and that Sony have stopped making the other versions. I can't believe it, I wish I had been in a position to buy one earlier.

I have done some research but I'm still not 100% clear with the current state of affairs. And I have some questions which I am hoping someone can shed some light on:

1) Is it true that the 40GB currently available has no flash memory compatibility, no wi-fi, cannot play PS2 games, no longer has 4 USB ports, all of which were available on the now discontinued 60 and 80GB versions of the console?

2) Does anyone know if there are new versions of the console coming anytime soon that will re-introduce these features, if they are indeed gone for now?

3) Does anyone know how to get a 60 or 80GB console? Would there be any problem buying from ebay.co.uk and having them sent here (other than obvious ebay uncertanties)?

Thanks.

a. am surprised that it no longer has flash memory slots
b. yes, no backward PS2 compatibility....so dont throw out your PS2 yet.
c. its has less USB slots than the 60GB version
d. it still has wifi

2) Does anyone know if there are new versions of the console coming anytime soon that will re-introduce these features, if they are indeed gone for now?
no news about newer version so far...i'd keep an eye on engadget.com..

you might need to resort to 2nd hand units.

thanks for the reply hanj, you were right, the current 40GB does indeed have wifi, it was actually an earlier 40GB version that apperently did not. But the other features are still missing and thats quite disappointing, but...

It looks like a new 80GB version is coming out in June (12th apparently) which will have all the features back including backwards compatiability for PS2 games. So I will wait for that.

This is all a bit dissappointing from Sony. I just want a PS3 and I want it to be awesome. I don't want to spend days researching this rubbish discovering that only some version do what i want and that some are discontinued and some new ones coming out that do what the old ones used to and this and that.
