Spare tire - is it obligatory to have one?

Post by Amandine.K » Sat May 10, 2008 4:15 pm

Hi,

We bought a car about two months ago. We changed the tires for the summer ones last week and we noticed that there is no spare tire at all in the car, nor the tools to change them. The previous owner seems to have taken them with him.

The car was bought from a car dealer so we're wondering:
1) Is it compulsory to have a spare tire (I would assume so but my husband thinks it's not)?
2) Should we then contact the car dealer to tell them that they sold us a car without it?

Thanks for your advise

Amandine

Hello,
there is no legal requirement to have a spare tire.
However, I'd contact the dealer to get one as all cars are equipped with one and if this one didn't have it its a flaw in my opinion, unless he told you about it before the sale.

No we were not told about it before the sale, we found out when we changed the tires as I was wondering where was the spare tire located.

The normal rules - in Holland (!) - on spare tires are: if a spare tyre is available in the car, this tyre must be in proper condition (tyre thread) and not be older than xx years. Having a spare tyre available is not obligatory, though

This is what I know as being valid in Holland, I'm not really sure about Finland but I'm guessing it's much the same..

I think nowadays new cars come with some special spray that goes inside the flat this temporarily seals the hole so no need for a spare. Thats how my car came anyways. I dont think it is compulsory otherwise the dealer is sealing you a illegal car which I dont think they'd do.

majority of new cars still has a spare tyre and the tools to change tyre

i'd call the dealer and ask for a set.

Thing is there is a space within the boot for the tools to change the tire and it's blatantly not there anymore. As for the tire itself it should be located below the car. I have heard that Opel Zafira are prone to have the spare tire stolen as it only takes a cutter to unlock the tire below the car. But in our case even the tool box is missing and that is inside the car...

I have a Touran with 7 seats so there is no room for a spare tire. Mine just came with an electric pump and a bottle of tyre glue..

So I guess a spare wheel is not a legal requirement anymore.
