Hard to say.

A typical well educated Finnish engineer got about 5000 Euro month. Typical means

1, Master degree in computer science from a Finnish university.
2. 10 year work experience
3. Family man

Yes, after tax is little over 3000 Euro.
Right now tax are lower than before. The tax rate of 4000 Euro a month and 5000 Euro a month is not very big difference.

In Helsinki is very hard to survive with 5000 Euro salary a month, if in family only one working.
Like me, I got little over 5000 Euro a month, after tax 3200 Euro month. Wife is a student, only get 200 something student money.

Every month goes like this,

Housing - 1400 Euro
Electricity + water + TV calble license, 100 Euro month
120 Euro pension saving,
120 Euro two health club membership card. Me Esportti, wife SAS.
40 wife's bus card.

That make 1800 Euro gone immediately after pay day.
Gasoline for car 300 Euro / monthly driving 3000 - 3500 KM.

400 Euro support wife's living.

That leave me only 700 Euro for living. I have not bought good cloth for years, all my cloth are bought during after Xmas sales.
Still , yearly car insurance, car tax, inspection, can be up to 1000 Euro. Right now, car is getting old, if it stop working, I really do not know what to do ...

Conclusion, it is very expensive to maintain an apartment + a woman, in Helsinki.

I was much richer when I was a student, living in hoas. I was working already at that time and single. After rent, I have more than 1000 Euro in hand. I always eat in restaurant, drink in the bar every weekend. Now, all gone ....

What do you mean family man? The married persons earn more salaries?

I can't believe my ears. Are you saying that your salary is €5000 and you find it hard to survive on that!

Only €700 left for living

Sorry I have to go and get a reality check... :?

P.S. You can forget kids...

To be honest, after paying housing, car expenses etc... How much more do you need? Perhaps if you like to eat in fancy restaurant every day you might find it impossible, but generally I would say 700 euros a month for random purchases and food is not bad. You won't feel rich, but you manage.

Well, you can't borrow much more than 300k for that amount a month, so it's hardly a mansion.
