I have a question (my kids didn't know the answer)...

Why did they tally up penalty points for the fighting after the whistle blew at the end of the game. They seemed to take ages conferring, writing things down and adding things up. But who cares? The game is over. Do those points actually count for anything? Do those players carry forward some kind of penalty??? :?

'Nother question...

When Peltonen got the 5+20 minute penalty and left the rink, Finland still played a full team on the ice, right? (Except IIRC correctly there was someone else in the cage too for a couple of minutes). But what's the rule on the 20 minute penalty? Is it like a suspension?

'Nother question...

That was clearly not a goal (according to my kids) so how come the ref/linesmen (whatever they are called) gave it? Don't they see the same footage as the TV audience???

'Nother question...

When Finland scores, Shedden writes "GOAL" in his notebook. Why? Doesn't he trust ref to keep track of the score? Does he have a short-term memory problem??? :?

Anyway, I thought his remarks at the end of the game ("I don't have a problem with that" - referring to the punch-up) were a bit not OK. Glad the kids were in bed by then, not sure I quite like here grown ups condone violence. But at least he admitted the goal was "doubtful" but "we'll take it anyway".

Shame the Canada game is so late. Not sure the kids can stay up two nights in a row.

All the penalties are booked up, no matter if the game has ended. Who cares? Well, statistics - and some people follow statistics as to see how the game proceeded.

Olli Jokinen (not Peltonen) got 5+20, and USA played power game for 5 minutes. That misconduct penalty means you're heading to shower, and cannot play the next game.

There's a "video referee" upstairs, and it's unbelievable he missed to see how the puck got in. There's news that that the "goal-referee" was sacked after the game.

However, I'd think one possibility is language problems, as those Russian referees don't speak much English. (Kind of "...it wen't through the net into goal" (Russian referee "so it went to goal...").

That was so hard shot by Koistinen that it went through net!

Looks like Magic.

thx.... those hockey commentators speak way too fast for me. Even my kids have trouble understanding and they speak Finnish much better than I do.

is it a big pb that Jokinen can't play tonight?

Well mark already said the most important things but here's a few additions;

In addition to the 5minute penalty, it does not end if the team with the powerplay scores, so there's a lot of scoring chances.
Salmela and Backes will also be lost for the next game as they also got a game penalty in the end, hence it really does matter to give the penalties after the game has ended
And here's a quotation from IIHF regarding Koistinen's goal: NOTE: The IIHF formally acknowledged after the game that Koistinen's shot had, indeed, entered the side of the net and should not have counted, and the video-goal judge will not be working for the rest of the tournament.

As to will it be a great loss we don't have Jokinen? With how he's performed in this tournament no  . Will it be a big loss we don't have Salmela? A tad, yeah.

Once again for tonites game I shall be proudly wearing my Canada hockey sweater, but if the Finns take the lead, the Canadian sweater will be taken off and neatly folded away, and the Finnish hockey T-shirt will be proudly worn! I will not lose tonite!
If Finland continue to play like they did last night, they have a good chance of upsetting the cart!

What is the story about the guys in the stands with the black hats & sunglasses? (In the Finland rooting section in this youtube video.) They look like the Akroyd-Belushi "Blues Brothers". (Hmm, Blues Brothers; did I just answer my own question?)

Does this mean the score will be changed?

As I understand it, no. They just stated that the goal referee did not do his job properly and hence will not have a job

And just now I see USA 9-1 over Norway. Ouch!!
Does that put Latvia in the 4th seed if they beat Germany?

Gnääh. &-3 for Canada... Now that vastaus oli Kanda - vastassa on USA which means a rematch today. I've got no fingernails left to chew. (Beating Canada would have met facing Latvia and Norway)

Total collapse of confidence and diciplined 5-men effort, and goalie lets every second shot in. It's not a good thing that this team's performance varies so greatly from day to day.
