Gardening problem - hedges

Post by mpjacko » Fri May 16, 2008 3:04 pm

Hi anyone give me some advice.

I live in the end house of a rivitalo when the neighbours are on my left as you look out of the window. Along both side, moving away from the house is two large screens which are about 5m long. Beyond this, we have another 5m of garden surrounded by a low fence. On the right is the car park and four or five cars park upto our fence where their electric points are.

We would like hide the view of this but know that it is impossible unless we have 3m+ hedges but i don't think the housing company would be too please. Our idea is to buy 4 or 5 Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant' (kartiotuija) and keep them cut to about 1.5m but is this good since they grow up to 5m tall. we want some partial cover so that we don't have to see the majority of the cars but don't want it to be too overwhelming. Thuja occidentalis 'smaragh' (timanttituija) are thinner but would these cover the 5m section. I think they might be too thin.

We could have a simple hedge but we want something to cover all year round (evergreen) and like now when its warmer to go in the garden, the next door hedge has not grown its leaves (were in oulu) as so nothing would block the view of us sing people get in and out of their cars.

I alos know evergreens will grown in the winter and so would be required to be covered to rotect them. arrrrggggg

any advice?

As far as I know there is no problem clipping a thuja hedge. IIRC August is the best time. So you can keep it short. We have a Brabant hedge we planted to hide the neighbours white fence (which is sort of dirty greeny/grey) and it's doing fine. I will probably trim the tops off this year as it has almost reached the top of the fence.

There are also some Christmas tree lookalikes that are suitable for evergreen hedges. Especially the droopy ones. Best to ask in a good garden centre for some advice.

But I don't know about the housing company rules.... only they could answer that question.

Another alternative would be to plant a small tree in the middle of the garden. That would hide the view of the cars from your house (you need to get the position right). An ornamental pear tree for example... very pretty, not too big. But it would eat up your garden a little bit and you would have to mow round it. You could cover it in fairy lights in the winter....
