Selänne -Gone with a simple handshake

Post by sinikettu » Thu May 22, 2008 1:43 pm

Somewhere in this forum there is an old thread saying something like "Teemu is the greatest"..
Well now he has announced his retirement from International hockey and says he will decide soon if he plays again in the NHL, decision next month.

There are two article in the Int Hesa on the subject...By Markku Lahti.
Both well worth reading.

http://www.hs.fi/english/article/Teemu+ ... 5236484812

As it says in one... he has lived across the Atlantic for 16 years.
His kids were born there.

Bit like some of the old hands on this forum but with reversed countries.
Most of us think Finland is now "home".
What about Teemu....?
So will he come "home" to Finland ...or is America now his "home"?

People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.

I think he is probably rich enough to have multiple homes in both

Where does he feel at home....? Who knows.

When I'm in Finland I feel at home here, but I also feel "at home" when I am in Somerset with mum and dad (even though I have never lived there 'cos they moved there after they retired) and I feel at home when I am in France since that is where a lot of my friends live and where my kids were born, and we had a house there.... On the other hand, I really do not feel at home in Reading (where I grew up) because I hardly ever go there any more and it has changed beyond all recognition. And I never really liked the place anyway.

They almost always seem to come back to Finland.

Not many of them spend quite THAT much time across the water. Kurri did, and he came back, I'll grant you that, but part of that was possibly his messy divorce from Tiina and the prospect of crying on Vanessa's ample rintavarustus. And my guess is that Selänne is a bit sharper than JK, who is apparently quite widely thought (allegedly, of course) to have difficulty knowing a mule's ass from a lemon. So it would probably come down to where the Selännes want the kids to spend their formative years.

I have wondered if the NHL players get an instant green card, or a work permit in Canada, when they move here. Are they subjected to the same checks as other immigrants? What happens when the contract is over? If they move back to Finland, they must lose a good chunk of their millions to the taxman. Maybe they can avoid it by keeping NA as their primary residence and only spend the beautiful summers in Finland. Nice... 8)

So that's what they mean by ulospäinsuuntautunut

What with both of them being suomalaiset people, I'd also start my guesswork on whether they want their kids to go to school in Finnish... not sure about the tax thingy, how would that go? (Needless to say i've never needed to worry about losing my millions :) )
