Finlandia with different lyrics

Post by Mark I. » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:09 am

I had no idea that there's a version of Finlandia by Jean Sibelius, with different English lyrics. Here David Archuleta sings "Be Still My Soal":

BTW, Finlandia is the real Finnish anthem (at least in my opinion, and should be recognized as such).

It's a bit like what Parry's Jerusalem (or the other one, that Elgar tune) is for the Brits... kind of an 'unofficial' national anthem, existing alongside Maamme-laulu (which frankly speaking plods on, in a manner not unlike God Save the Queen)... if we look at the songs purely as tunes, neither of the official ones really hold a candle to the alternative anthems IMO.

It might interest you to know that the tune of Finlandia was also used as the national anthem of Biafra.

Bill Bailey has an intriguing suggestion concerning the current British anthem btw ... :D
