Wild Orhids In Finland

Post by sinikettu » Tue Jun 10, 2008 2:21 pm

This story in todays Int Hesa sent me off on a search of my photo archives.

Somebody stole the only known plant

In my own archives I find this photo taken in 2005.

One can see that although related it is not the same orchid.

The plant that was stolen was on an island.

My photo was taken in the marshes between Myyrmäki and Kaivoksela.
..2005:29 May..
I went back there to check today..
There are several in full bloom. They are protected by nice muddy swampy ground :D

Very nice picture! I have never seen that flower, it's really beautiful! Although I would guess it isn't an orchid, the petals are totally symmetrical while an orchid usually has a lip or the petals are otherwise not totally symmetrical. I made a quick google search, would it perhaps be a raate flower, menyanthes or bog-bean in English?

There are several orchids in Finland (kämmekkä in Finnish), but most of them are very rare. The most well known is maariankämmekkä. Here is a list: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luettelo_S ... 6ist%C3%A4
