Stay after residence permit expiration

Post by polarbear » Tue Jun 10, 2008 1:49 pm

My student visa will expire at the end of August, but I want to stay two months more after the expiration. In general as a tourist I can stay up to 90 days without visa, but I am not sure if this visa waiver rule applies to this case or not. Will it be OK if I travel outside Schengen area like UK or Ireland and return back? Please help me this since this is urgent matter to me.

When your visa expires, you have to leave. Calling yourself a tourist for 3 month extra won't work.
I'm not sure, but I expect that you have to be away for 90 days, before you can enter again.
Best to ask the police what is the actual rule here.

I wonder if this would apply to you?
www.migri.fi wrote:What happens after the studies are completed?

After completing the studies, the student may remain in Finland if he or she can be granted a new residence permit on other grounds. The permit may be granted, for example for continuing studies within the same field or on the basis of family ties or employment.

A foreigner who has taken a degree in Finland can get also a residence permit for search for work. The permit can be granted for six (6) months.

You have 90 days in a 180 day period of Schengen eligibility once any relevant visas expire. Once you remain for 90 days, you must leave for 90 before you can be admitted once again. These are the strictest interpretations, of course, and you will find that many border control officers are more lenient if you don't pose a threat or are suspicious.
