Digibox question

Post by TampereOwl » Sat Jun 14, 2008 1:43 pm

I just moved house, from an antenna building to a cable one. I have two digiboxes, neither of which work. I am quite happy to chick the telly away, after the European Championships have finished, but in the meantime I need some kind of solution. So, anyone want to swap? Or failing that, anyone have any experience with indoor antennas (antenni)?

An indoor antenna would work just fine for you providing you buy one with a built in amplifier such as THIS one.

I have the same setup in my bedroom as I'm not hooked up to the roof aerial there, it works great.

The missus mentioned the problem to her (electrically obsessed) uncle yesterday, and an hour later we had a new widescreen telly and a cable digibox installed from his 'reserve' collection in his garage. So I now have a telly and digibox that I really don't want to put in the bedroom, any offers? You'll need to buy that thing steves mentioned if you're not hooked up to an antenna though.

Thanks!

See here. (The link leads to a price comparison service. Some of the products on the list are accessories, not actual boxes.)

Note that there are three main types of boxes on the market: DVB-T for terrestrial reception via an aerial, DVB-C for cable tv, and DVB-S or DVB-S2 for satellite. Some tvs and digital video recorders may have multiple tuners for multiple DVB systems in a single hybrid device, and there are even some which allow swapping the tuner inside the device for another type, but this is an exception, not the default case.

When comparing prices, pay attention to the specifications: the cheapest low-end DVB-T boxes don’t necessarily feature a card reader slot for decoding and viewing the pay channels. The DVB-C boxes, however, always do – or at least I haven’t seen one that doesn’t – so their prices generally start higher.

What an excellent full answer - thanks!

So if I have an apartment with an aerial cable which now just gives a 'buy digital TV' message, should I be looking for a T or a C box? Or maybe it's impossible for you to know :D.

There are no analog channels on air any longer, so if you still can receive an analog channel which displays a message like that, instead of just static, it’s probably from your local cable company.

But the best way to find out for sure would be asking either the maintenance company or one of your neighbors. Just ask them whether you need a kaapelidigiboksi (DVB-C) or an antennidigiboksi (DVB-T)... The former have probably had to answer that same question dozens of times already and the latter are likely to have bought a box themselves, figuring out what kind they need, so they should know, too.
