I will study in Finland, but I have a few questions.

Post by marianaaguiar » Fri Jun 20, 2008 1:29 am

I am from Brazil. I am getting married to a Finish citizen and I will live in Helsinki. I have a few questions that I would like to ask.
1- If I pass the entrance examination in Finland, can I transfer the credits that I have gotten at a Brazilian University?
I have taken the following courses:
1- General Theory of Administration - 1 semester - 3 hours a week
2- Introduction to Economics - 1 semester - 3 hours a week
3- Sociology - 1 semester - 3 hours a week
4- Management of Small and Medium Businesses - 1 semester - 3 hours a week
5- Management Development - 1 semester - 3 hours a week
6- Company Law - 1 semester - 3 hours a week
7- Public and Private Institution of Law - 1 semester - 3 hours a week

What will be the required score for TOEFL to be admitted at the Pollitech?
I would really appreciate if you could help me wh this,

Best Regards,

Mariana Aguiar

As far as i know, it won't be credited. You will go back to square one. They will only credit it if those subjects were taken in a Finnish educational instutition.

Some polytechnics, some courses you can get "passed" by a test or with old credits, but nothing automagical.

Read through www.admissions.fi
The minimum language skills requirement is IELTS score academic level 5.5, TOEFL score 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based or 79-80 for the internet -based test, grade C in the Finnish Matriculation examination in advanced level English, or skills level 4 in English in the Finnish general language examination (www.oph.fi => Tutkintopalvelut => Yleiset kielitutkinnot). Both TOEFL and IELTS test results are valid for two years. The Finnish general language examination does not have a set date of validity.
Cheers, Hank W.

Actually you're wrong. It's on individual basis. I got credits from my English degree that I did in France for my Nursing degree I did here. It went towards the "free choice" credits. Also one of my friend did some of her nursing education in Germany and got most of the credits transfered to the Finnish system. She roughly just had to take a few missing courses and do her thesis. She graduated in one year and a half instead of 3 and a half.
So what you'll have to do is to go and see your degree program coordinator, take an appointment to do the transfer. As I said it might not go straight away to courses taught in the school but you might have some in free choice. And considering you need at least 15ECTs of these it's always welcome.

There are ongoing efforts to unify the educational systems in EU countries. So, the studies in EU are more or less recognized within the Union. For Brasil, things are different. It depends of the bilateral agreements signed by Finland and Brasil.
