Finns top Motorsport Standings

Post by Mattlill2000 » Tue Jun 24, 2008 1:55 pm

It just occured to me that a Finn is leading the World Rally Championship with Mikko Hirvonen and a Finn is leading the World Championships in Mororcycle Road Racing with Mika Kallio in the 250cc. class. Add World Champion Kimi Raikkonen in 3rd place in the World Formula One Championships, I don't know if any other country in the world has ever duplicated such a result?

Forget one country ... try one man... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Surtees

1995 was a fairly good year for British motorsport McRae won the WRC, Foggy won the Superbikes and Hill was second in Formula 1 (won it the following year) and Mclaren won LeMans (albeit without a British driver - infact one of them was Finnish).

Kotikaupungin katu oli hiekkainen tie
Sinä Anglia katolleen kääntyi
Vielä vinossa liikennemerkkikin lie
Joka ohjausvirheestä vääntyi
Etupenkiltä lasin läpi lennettyäni
Olin pyörinyt piennarta pitkin
Ojan pohjalla hampaita sylkiessäni
Minä oksensin verta ja itkin

Tässä naamassa arpikin kaunistus olisi
Ja hampaat voi uusiksi laittaa
Mut ajokortin ja Anglian kilvet vei poliisi
Se harrastustoimintaa haittaa

Rallikuskiksi pääsystä toiveita elätän
Turha on äitien sankaripoikia neuvoa
Eihän rallia voiteta jos siellä pelätään
Maalissa juhlitaan voittajapoikaamme Teuvoa

Viikonlopuksi autoa etsiessäni
Otin lainaksi naapurin Sierran
Pikatiellä mä rekkaa päin törmätessäni
Kai törmäsin viimeisen kerran

Teuvo, ota meidät kyytiin
Teuvo, sun Angliasi kyytiin

I've got some pics waiting for a winter of my dad doing "hankiralli" in a Goggomobil from the 60's...
Cheers, Hank W.

I think in was the year 2000 that Mika Häkkinen won the Formula 1 Championship and Tommi Mäkinen the Rallye World Championship! Indeed, not bad for a country of 5,2 million.

I would still trade it all in for a chance to see Finland play in the Football World Championships (or even the European Championships). It's a long way to go. FIFA just dropped Finland's ranking by 8 positions. The Finnish National Team is now considered to be the 44th best football team in the world. That's not enough to make it to the World Championships - at least not from Europe.

"By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes."
