Where can I buy compressed air?

Post by luckykitty » Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:42 pm

Hi,
My laptop has some overheating problem and maybe the fan is blocked, so I'm wondering where I can buy an aircompressor and how much they cost?

Btw. if my laptop refuses to start now, like it overheated and doesn't start anymore, even if i blow out the dust, is there a way to start it again?

I've been having the same problems with my läppäri...
You can buy compressed air from Clas Ohlsen for about 5 Euro (don't remember the price exactly but was something like this). (You'll probably also get it in other shops like that).

I found instructions on the internet to open my laptop (differs for each model of course) and then access the fans as well as the heat sink. In my case, the problem was not the fan but the heat sink -- it was totally clogged with dust. I didn't dare to take it out entirely (but there are instructions how to do that on the net), so I just tried to clean it as well as possible by blowing air into it from the sides I could access. It helped, cooled down the pc by about 15 degrees. But it's not a lasting effect, I need to do it regularly in order to keep my laptop below 60 degrees and enjoy the silence of the fans..

I don't know if i can still save my laptop, it might have shortcircuited or something from the heat, because the screen when funny colours and then the whole thing doesnt start anymore :O.
Can you take a guess at what broke in my laptop? Do you know anywhere I can get it fixed cheaply btw :O?

Mhm, not sure, probably the computer geeks on this board can help better than myself. Could be that it needs some time until it has cooled off, and then maybe there's a chance it'll start again? Or then the processor died from the heat or something.. no idea really. But good luck!

If the warranty to your computer is still valid, take it to a certified dealer and they'll repair it for free. Otherwise of course it'll be bloody expensive, but I'm sure there's laptop repair shops, sorry can't refer you to any one in particular..

If you are going to open your computer (laptop or not) don't waste your money to compressed air, just use vacuum cleaner. At least then you don't get same dust clogging your computer again. Don't hoover or blow (with compressed air) to fans or you can break bearings.

If your laptop is old, then you can, probably, get better computer for less money, if you buy new one.

Mhm, I tried it with a vacuum cleaner but found the compressed air more effective. Maybe depends on how hypermodern your hoover is.. What is key is using these little "straws" with the compressed air which allows to "target" better..

Yeah, those work, a laptop has an *amazing* amount of space to fit dust, and it seems the static draws in a lot of it. What I said about "woman hairs" is true, as long hairs get onto the axle of the fans. And hair is pretty durable material.

By the way, what is 'compressed air' in Finnish?

I think the vacuum cleaner i have doesn't have a small enough nozzle for vacuuming the heatsinks etc. i actually tried vacuuming but it didn't get rid of the small bit of dust stuck to the fan.

I'm sure that the motherboard or some other component has overheated and yeah no amount of dust blowing or vacuuming is going to make it work right now, but good to know how to clean the fan for the future working comps anyway :)

Hank: How did u know about the long hair thing :o did u clean out a longhaired-women's laptop? Well, actually so far, i haven't seen long hairs inside fans, but i havent opened up many laptops hehe :). Just one.
