Living in Vaasa and Laapenranta

Post by warrior » Thu Jun 26, 2008 7:04 am

Hello all,
My name is Kishan . I am from chennai,Southern most part of India. I would be coming to Finland very shortly for doing Master studies .

I would like to know living in Vaasa as compared with Laapenranta.I am not trying to start a war here by making comparisons but just would like to know some information. I have the following queries ,
1) Which of the two places has much to offer in terms of sightseeing and tourism?
2) Which of the two cities are technologically much more advanced ? I know that Laapenranta is city is technically very advanced like offering Wi-Fi services in many places etc . But How does Vaasa compare in these terms ?
3) How is the winter in Vaasa ? Based on my research I find that winters are long and dark in Vaasa with temperatures reacching to -15 . But How low the temperature can get in Laapenranta & how long are the extreme winters if there is ?
4)Which of these places offer varieties of vegetables and fruits ?
5)I understand that Finland is expensive country. But Comparing the two cities , which one is more suitable for economical living ?

I have been always fascinated by Scandinavia and I respect the Finnish "Free" education system and also its culture. I will try my level best to find employment in Finland related to the field of my study after completing the Master's program and owe my gratidude by paying regular taxes . I will learn Finnish soon.

You have to build your own igloo and go chase penguins on the ice.

I thought this was the right forum to ask such questions.
Anyways thanks for the suggestion. I really feel bad for landing up in the wrong place.
I have a better house to live than an igloo

1) Which of the two places has much to offer in terms of sightseeing and tourism?

Both are small towns. So no major tourist attractions.

2) Which of the two cities are technologically much more advanced ? I know that Laapenranta is city is technically very advanced like offering Wi-Fi services in many places etc . But How does Vaasa compare in these terms ?

I don´t even know what Wi-Fi means. But whatever it is, I cannot see why things would be different in Vaasa and Lappeenranta.

3) How is the winter in Vaasa ? Based on my research I find that winters are long and dark in Vaasa with temperatures reacching to -15 . But How low the temperature can get in Laapenranta & how long are the extreme winters if there is ?

Winter in Vaasa is milder than one in Lappeenranta. Coastal towns always have less minus degrees than ones inland. BUT often windy coast feels a lot colder than drier and less windy inland. So -15° in Vaasa easily feels colder than -25° in Lappeenranta

4)Which of these places offer varieties of vegetables and fruits ?

The same. Most fruit and vegetables are imported.

5)I understand that Finland is expensive country. But Comparing the two cities , which one is more suitable for economical living ?

The same. I think.

Vaasa has VPS and VIFK, Lapeentanta has only Rakuunat in Kakkonen. In ice hockey things are different, but I wouldn't want to see Saipa getting creamed every week. Better to watch vaasan Sport's triumphant promotion season under Juhanni Tamminen.

Yes, this forum is for asking such questions. You also get such answers for such questions. My turn for a such question: Do you have cars in India or do you fly around on a magic carpet?

And Lappeenranta is on the lakeside, so that evens out a little bit before the freeze. That Wi-fi is wireless internet network, you know, you send the carrier pigeons instead of using the pet reindeer. Most self-respecting campuses have some sort of a network set up.

Hellp EP,
Thank you so much for giving a lot of information. It has been really helpful.

Hank W...

Here are the answers for your questions......
My turn for a such question: Do you have cars in India or do you fly around on a magic carpet?
Actually we dont use magic carpets to fly. There are cheaply available Harry Potter broom stick around every corner.. .. We use that for flying... 8)

Also on roads we use wagons pulled by cows to travel at super speeds....

Hi Kishan...Don't know much about both cities but would try to answer your queirs with little information that I have..
1.About same...Vaasa is a coastal city whereas Laaperanta in an inland city...Laaperanta has a slight edge as its closer to the finnish capital and near the Russian border in case you are interested to visit the Czar..Both Vaasa and Laaperanta have a population of around 60,000...
2.Laaperanta has a reputed technological institiute in Finland...and there are bunch of Indians studying there...Don't know about Vaasa though..
3.EP explained this point very clearly...and since you are coming from Chennai,be prepared for the most shocking winter you would ever experience...Thankfully you did not plan of staying in Lapland or else you would be frozen...Winters here are long, dark, wet, and terrribly cold and can be depressing depending on how you plan to pass your time during that period...
4.None...Most of the fruits are imported...
5.Atleast the cost of living in Vaasa or Laaperanta would be lower than that of Helsinki...
6.Since you are coming to Finland to do your Masters, wouldn't it be logical to pick the place which serves your primary function of being here the most,i.e. to study...If you are planning on doing masters related to IT or mechanical,Laaperanta would be the place to look for...Maybe someone can correct me about this incase i am wrong

ah, I've heard of this, its supraghee technology, this must explain when we try to find someone responsible at our office in Pune they disappear so fast, we always thought they fly out the window with the magic carpet... 8)

How misinformed you are...Don't you know we have passed the age of superghee technology and no longer make use of magic carpets and wonder brooms...There were slow as mach2 and had to be carried around in person...So now we just transmit from one place to another use telepathy to communicate with each other rather than the outdated internet...and since the access to these products is only limited to Indians in India, you would only get your hands on it when it is marketed worldwide...Maybe i can smuggle one for you next time I am in India but I doubt it will work here..

Vaasa has maybe a bit more economy studies, they have Hanken and Åbo Akademi "side campuses", but the Vaasa University has also a technology department - automation and computer science... LUT is then again a hardcore engineering place.
..and since you are coming from Chennai,be prepared for the most shocking winter you would ever experience..
Oh come one now, its much more temperate than winters in India... in Himachal Pradesh
Winters here are long, dark, wet, and terrribly cold
But theres much less mosquitoes 8)
5.Atleast the cost of living in Vaasa or Laaperanta would be lower than that of Helsinki...
The student housing is reasonable, but then the money goes into avoiding boredom.... not that you couldn't be bored in Helsinki.

You are absolutely right. I will be coming to study Master's related to Communications technology . I have been selected at both Laapenranta and Vaasa. The main difference is that at LUT the course I have chosen is more related to Communications Software and the course at university of Vaasa is more related to Telecommunications Hardware. I am just scratching my head to make a decision....
