Studying Finnish in Finland
Hello everybody
I am new to this forum, so lemme introduce myself. I am originally from India. I just finished Bachelor's Degree in Aviation from Ukraine and I want to move to Finland to study Master's Degree in Business Administration. Unfortunately the deadline for application is over and I need to wait till next February 2009. So I am thinking to move to Finland and join language course for atleast 6 months. In that way I will able to know the language and get basic ideas about living and lifestyle in Finland. So would anyone let me know about colleges where I can learn Finnish language? PM me if possible. Replies, responses, advices, suggestions...all are welcome.
Thanks a lot.

Otherwise a brilliant plan I wish more people would be as sensible, but unfortunately there is one unfair snag. From outside the EU you need to get a student residence permit, which to get for language studying requires full-time degree studies. So in other words - even if there was a course in a college for 6 months for studying Finnish, you wouldn't get a permit. You can get a permit if you already would have been accepted to study for a degree programme (like the business admin) and then study Finnish. http://www.migri.fi => students =>non-EU.
Cheers, Hank W.

Hello Mr. Hank and thanks for the prompt reply.
So technically speaking its not possible. But do they allow to study language course on VISA (3 months stay or less)? If that is possible then I can travel to finland, join a language course and then apply to some University? If they agree I do get the residential permit right.

Re: Studying Finnish in Finland
Well, yes you can...
...*but*. Statistically getting into a Finnish University is hard, and especially from "certain countries" theres been too many applications they don't even give visas for the entrance examinations. Reason is the people come and then they're found somewhere else in the EU. So basically all students must apply "from outside" as they want to be sure in the throes of disappointment you don't accidentally board the plane to Köln instead of Kiev.
If you are staying in Kiev I know there is some expat community there, a few companies etc, and I would think they might have someone offering Finnish courses (university)? So it isn't impossible to start even online.

No, you will never get a residence permit to do part-time studies and to go looking for a job. If you have a job already, apply on those grounds and make sure to study Finnish while you are here.U can find a part-time job,and do the language thing at the same time
