Thanks

Somebody asked this a couple of weeks ago. If I remember right, the answer was that you cannot. Farmers are not allowed to butcher, all the animals must go through a registered butchery that is overseen by a veterinarian.

Why?Travmies wrote:Unbelievable !"#¤% again
This is EU-wide legislation, ultimately there to protect the consumer from potentially dangerous meat.
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I misread it as "vegetarian" for a second!EP wrote:...all the animals must go through a registered butchery that is overseen by a veterinarian.

Oh sure!! If you believe that the farmer sells his animals to the butcher, then go and buys it back as packaged meat, you're sadly mistaken! If you believe that the hunter takes his "kill" to the butcher, there is simply no hope for you.EP wrote:Somebody asked this a couple of weeks ago. Home butchering was done in the past, (with veterinarian control!) But it is to expensive compared to meat processing plants that can do the same for you. So in fact, there is no difference between the meat from the shop and from the farm. Only the packaging.
Done it a few times. Bought a wild boar, had it sent to the butcher and then got the meat neatly packed back.
They don't buy the meat back. The butcher just performs a service (for a price).Oh sure!! If you believe that the farmer sells his animals to the butcher, then go and buys it back as packaged meat, you're sadly mistaken!

The beef farmers I know sell their beef cattle to Saarioinen, then they buy back what cuts they want "at cost price". So strictly speaking, yes, they do buy it back as well.

This also happens with moose that is sold in the supermarket. I believe that meat can be given away without it, but not sold for profit.Cory wrote:MIL owned dairy cattle. Some bulls were raised to a year and then butchered for meat. Animal went to the butcher after the vet put a signature on a piece of paper (after a simple blood test) confirming the animal wasn't sick and then the meat came back all packaged for the freezer. A farmer has the connections. The animal nor the meat was sold. This wasn't illegal and it's done all the time.
