Switching from AMK to a University

Post by mushroom » Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:16 pm

Hello,

Recently i got a letter that i've been admitted to Metropolia (Polytechnics or whatever it's called, metropolia.fi), which is a great thing. I'l start in the end of next month, studying Information Technology (Data Networks is my major subject, in english).

I'm studying for a Bachelor Degree, and i was wondering if it's possible to switch to a University after 3+ years of studying for that degree (and getting it). Not only switch, but continue for a higher degree there, and not start over. Another reason i'm asking this is because i don't have a "Ylioppilas Todistus" from school (I used to study in Nazareth, Israel where i finished school but never got that higher education thing, not sure what its called in english).

AMK's as far as i know accept students who don't have the "Ylioppilas Todistus" but universities don't, so what if i get a bachelor degree in Metropolia, then continue for a higher degree in a university? Will the AMK education be sufficent to get me in?

Thank you! If you don't know, atleast point me somewhere where i can find out.

who knows how it will be in the future but at the moment the universities look at AMK papers a bit down their nose. basically you need to study a lot of the bachelors degree over. you can also get the ylioppilas diploma done in night school.

So are you saying it's possible to move to a University with only your Bachelor Degree?

I can go back to Israel and do 2 exams i have left to get my diploma, but since i got to Metropolia without that i thought i'd rather continue than waste more time of my life. That's why i wondered if i can move to a university with simply my bachelor degree. From what you say i understand it's a long shot, not highly possible.

considering only one in five people applying to the Helsinki university got a study place... but it does say that you can apply to the university with a polytechnic degree without an yo-tutkinto. however thats not a "transfer" as such, as the intake is to the bachelor degree programmes. so it isn't impossible to get to study in the university, depending on the faculty they have slightly varying criterias.

Thanks for the link inkku. So it seems that TKK also recognises bachelor degrees awarded by polytechnics. Great!

I'm in the same case as you mushroom, I also got in Metropolia for a B.Eng in environmental engineering and I'd like to do a master degree after that.

I tried to get informations from different european universities of technology, and it seems that doing a master degree in one of these after a bachelor in a polytechnic (AMK, Hogeschool, Högskolan, Fachhochschule, whatever it is called) is perfectly possible, though the selection may be really hard.
You must have really good grades for your bachelor degree (TU Delft in the Netherlands for instances requires you to have a grade point average of at least 75% of the maximum score, and no failed parts) and in some cases you may also be required to follow supplementary courses from the bachelor corresponding to your master programme, either in addition to you master courses, or as a pre-master year.
I don't know if TKK requires that aswell, I will try to contact them and ask more about it.

yes, some of the technology universities offer also what is called "muuntokoulutus" for "old system" "plain" engineers that are pre-polytechnic era... they also take in people without long maths, but then the first year they cram you full with logarithms so you need to go to the loo to derivate... so it isn't impossible at all... just challenging....

Thank you for all the information guys, it definitely cleared things up for me. I'm glad to know it's possible!

Just one last thing if anyone happens to know: From what I've read so far the subject i get to study in a University after i transfer has to be the same as the one i got a Bachelor's Degree in the polytechnics school, in my case, Information Technology (Major subject: Communications and Data Networks)

Code: Select all

http://www.metropolia.fi/en/studies/technology_and_transport/information_technology_tuition_in_english/
http://www.metropolia.fi/en/studies/technology_and_transport/information_technology_tuition_in_english/communications_and_data_networks/
Does this mean i get to study any subject related to computers / information technology (such as software engineering) or such? In other words, a different major subject? I've always had a hobby for computers, and I'd basically want to know a lot more than just networking (networking in everything, not just computers)

Thanks!

P.S: Anyone here study the same major as i do? I love computers, and i don't want to study something that goes far away from that ;) Thank you for taking the time to help me out!
