True, and the ex-pat market is probably still it's main target though I assume the high school rakes up a few local rich kids who fail to get into the other IB schools and no doubt plenty of Russians from across the border. In PYP and MYP it does offer the possibility for kids here temporarily to continue their studies and then move on to another IB in a different country. Only Ressu offers that I think. Espoo does not yet offer PYP/MYP in English and I don't think SYK does either. Some of the other schools offer Cambridge GCSEs but not to the same level as in the UK for example. But to balance the budgets the school has to charge high fees to the smaller kids (I guess these subsidise the high school expenses). We could've hired a full-time private tutor for our 3 boys for the same cost as a year in ISH!!! At the time these were justified by "smaller class sizes" but when my kids moved to Komeetta the elder two both went into smaller classes than they had been in at ISH. Espoo international will probably get PYP/MYP status within the next 2-3 yrs, so I guess the metro extension will encourage even more ex-pats to "go local".

It is not unusual for international schools to go belly up. Two international schools in Budapest went under while we were there, one of them being the British School. They typically have an annual pupil turnover of over 30% (students leaving), so an enrolments crisis can cause huge cash flow problems. One reason why most staff are foreigners on temporary contracts. Difficult to attract top quality staff if you can only offer them a 2 year stint at best.

ah see thats the thing they aren't adhering to the "system" so the county/state funding is... well, isn't there. they're somewhat anal regarding private schools in finland. and the old yarn "why would you pay for free education" comes up with a blank stare...
ISH does follow the National Core Curriculum (within the IB framework) and they do get state funding.

correct me if I understood the idea wrong - but is it not designed such that the kids can adhere to countryX curriculum or something to that extent?
Yes, but so far I haven't found much information on it. All I know is that it open this autumn.

which might also explain the lack of "community feeling" at ISH. not going on with the old yarn of nuns and such, but if you are there 3-4 years and on the 4th year you only have a few classmates that started with you - as well as having gone through 3-4 whining expat teachers from japan teeching engrish... well... ummm...

yeah, but during the little scandal back then - I don't remember the specifics - that they weren't getting as much as other schools because of something or the other (we're not talking of the high school only)... it was some technicality... you know like cross-border county students etc. in the finnish schools and whats the intake area

Yeah... if you don't get a KELA ID number before the term starts you are billed extra. Can't remember the amount but it was quite substantial.
