buying new laptop from online store

Post by blaugrau » Sat Aug 02, 2008 12:17 am

Hey,

I'm playing with the thought of maybe perhaps possibly getting a new laptop, and was wondering if people know if there's a trustworthy online computer store in Finland? Concerning the laptop I'm looking for, someone recommended the Lenovo Thinkpad to me, but they don't seem to belong to the standard product range of mainstream shops like gigantti, at least according to my first superficial investigation. That's why I'm interested in getting it online.

(As a sidenote, was wondering what other people think of that make/model? My main criteria are things like long-lasting battery, good cooling system=no overheating/loud ventilators, works well under linux, reasonable light weight.)

Opinions on this are very appreciated.

having a new lenovo T61..I would not support Lenovo as a reccomendation.

You should get something from a local store with warranty....Verkkokaupa have a good selection.

I would not want to deal with Lenovo based on the number of times this laptop has been in for a repair.

find the models you want and then google... especially the company sites support...
I had an HP laptop you could fry eggs on...

Agree with that, my old IBM Thinkpad was fine, but my new Lenovo Thinkpad (also a T61) is utter cack.
It won't stay turned off... shut it down, stick it in the case and the stupid thing powers up again.
Only way to stop it turning itself back on is to unplug the battery.

I would send it for repair but have needed it constantly for the last couple of months.

I give it 0/10... !"#¤% rating.

Thanks, very useful to hear these opinions on the Lenovo.. ! Might postpone the whole project now anyway and probably will go for something more readily available in the shops.

Have you tried hintaseuranta ( http://hintaseuranta.fi/tuote.aspx/26312) to compare prices and which stores sell them here?
You can also do that with www.vertaa.fi
( You can try products from www.beesting.fi and also visit their shop at http://www.beesting.fi/konserni/cruz_broker/ )
you can find a lot of online stores from http://hintaseuranta.fi/kaupat.aspx

Well, I have to say I am happy with my T61 and have never experienced any problems with it so far. I own an IBM R50e as well and despite its age, it's still working flawlessly and is very sturdy - this is what I love most about thinkpads.

In my T61 battery lasts on average 2-2.5 hours. It does have a good cooling system, especially if you compare it to HP (terribly hot!). It is definitely very quiet and light. No idea about Linux.

Better check some other websites for opinions, like http://www.notebookreview.com or http://reviews.cnet.com. That should help you a bit. And to be honest, I wouldn't get Fujitsu, HP, Acer or any of this crap available in Gigantti. Instead I would check out Lenovo or Sony.

Interesting.

This is my 8th IBM laptop (600, t20, t21, t30,t40,t41,x60s) and the build quality is poor IMHO.

This is whats wrong.

- Restarts when in sleep - as we have encrypted HDD, this means it sits at login screen - full fan, full processor as none of the bios settings have kicked in
-Keyboard "locks" keys, physically the board moves out of alignment and I need to push down on the whole keyboard to push it back to place.
- 2 USB ports do not work
- PCMCIA slot flap broke, i do not use PCMCIA
- WLAN/BT switch does not turn off when in OFF position.
- randomly resets

I cant be arsed to get these fixed as it takes out IM desk weeks to get this kind of thing done through Lenovo

I will say that comments from our service desk strongly support the fact that the T61 has produced a drop in quality over previous generations.

I have no qualms about actual performance - battery and speed are fine. I just feel the physical build quality is not as tough as previous iterations.

Just my $0.05.

Have you thought about dell? I have been using dell for about 5 years now and i know people who have been with dell for a very long time.

Quality is good.Build is good. Only thing maybe is that there should be more air vents cause i don't think they use the water cooling system.

Parts are accessible and you can get a warranty if you do buy it online. Not sure about lenovo, have not really seen pple using it. It also depends on what you wanna do...If its more graphics , design , visual based editing , then Apple or Sony would be rather good.

If just normal business presentations , applications ( excel , word , powerpoint and email) i'd say Fujitsu or Dell.

Just make sure you have the memory. Computers are like cars. You can have a 2L car with a turbo(memory) and still go damn fast compared to a 3L one. I'd say a 3gb memory is fairly good.

Cheers.
