Hey FInnman, First of all, writing in all capital letter is like SHOUTING!! so STOP shouting!!
Just becos you are American and want to marry a FInn, dont make your a$$ in Gold!!
Depending on where you marry, you apply for a residents permit based on family ties in your country and wait for thier decision after you have provided all the right papers.
Check these links out thoroughly before you start another post or shouting:

As for citizenship, your primary concern will be able to prove proficiency in Finnish on par with Level 3 in the National language eligibility

Re: Marrying a Finn
Hi All,
A slightly different topic - my other half and I (I have Finnish nationality, but live in the UK, he is British) are getting married in Finland next year. We have no plans to live there yet, maybe in a couple of years or so. We have good jobs in the UK and are happy to save before taking the relocation plunge!
Anyway, my question is: We've been told by our registrar in the UK that it would be wise to get the wedding certificates translated officially into English. I've heard this is quite
expensive - does anyone know how much this would cost
Thanks for the info I've read from previous posts - much appreciated! Is there a lot of bureaucracy in just the wedding process?
Thanks!

Re: Marrying a Finn
Well, if I was you I'd get "married" in the UK, and then have the "church wedding" in Finland. Saves a lot of bureaucracy, as... well... you have to proof you're not married which paperwork costs as well coming the other way.
Cheers, Hank W.

Translation is the cheapest of the costs (http://www.maistraatti.fi/hel32 wrote:

Apostille-todistus 9 euroa might do)

As Hank says, if you re plannig to marry here, you both need to provide proof that you were not married before..
For a Finn, no problem as its in the register. For you, you need to get a certificate of no impediment ( or something like that..Search this forum for marriage and you will see more info)

Re: Marrying a Finn
Hi All,
Thank you for your replies, it looks like it will be cheaper than we expected to get it translated. We want to have the whole marriage celebration in Helsinki because it is easier for my family there.
Does anyone know how far in advance we should contact maistraati? I've heard not more than a year, but they have been slow in coming forward with info.
Also, I've heard that you can hire trams for an hour or two - does anyone know how much this costs?
Thanks,
Hel32

Re: Marrying a Finn
Hiya,
My Finnish husband and I got married in Melbourne, Australia in April 2007. We came to Finland in May 2007 and I applied for a residence permit in the same month. It took about 2 weeks and €120. I was also expecting a child in September. I guess having a child together makes it a lot easier. We applied at a police station in Kotka. There were no lines and it was a very smooth process with one interview.
hope this helps....

Re: Marrying a Finn
You dont even have to get married to get a residence permit if you are living together and have children.
