Helsinki To Mikkeli Via Bus

Post by Jack86 » Tue Aug 12, 2008 10:43 am

Hi,

I have searched through the internet and found 2 bus operators ( Matkahuolto & Expressbus ). I have also looked thru' their timetables and stuff. However , I am not so familiar with their "rest" area and transit. Can someone kindly explain what it means? Does it mean we stop and change buses or rest and carry on with the same bus?

Another question would be is it possible to buy the ticket from the airport and take the bus from the airport to mikkeli? It looks possible because they have bus terminals at the international terminal but i would like to know about anyone's experiences. It would be really really useful.

Thank you

Hi, yes it's possible to take one straight from the airport to Mikkeli. If u r not going straight from there, it's better to take a train.
Rest area means what it means, so u don't need to change there, what I understand.

Matkahuolto and Expressbus aren't bus operators. Matkahuolto is a service and marketing company that markets bus operators routes and sells bus tickets to them. Expressbus is a uniform marketing name for private bus companies' express services. Also Expressbus tickets you can buy at Matkahuolto outlets.

Go to http://www.expressbus.com/?id=101 , type "Helsinki-Vantaa Airport" in the first box and "Mikkeli" in the second box, and choose a date. You get a list of the buses that go from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to Mikkeli.

If it says "Transfer" in the first column (Departure) of the timetable, then you need to change buses. In that case, you can see two buses mentioned in the last column (Service). "Rest area" is the place where you physically get out of bus one and climb into bus two. If it doesn't say anything about transfer in the first column, then you can travel in the same bus all the way from the airport to Mikkeli.

If you are unable to buy the ticket in advance, the bus driver will gladly sell you one.

So i cant really buy the tickets from the airport? I would have to buy directly from the bus driver and the bus terminal in the airport?

Is it possible to take a taxi from helsinki to mikkeli and if its possible, do you know what the cost would be like?

a) Of course...but see (b)

b) Vantaa to Mikkeli is about 250 Kmtrs = 400 €uro at least.

Why not take the very frequent and cheap airport bus to down town "main" railway station and take the train from there to Mikkeli. (There is an option to take a bus to Tikkurila station which is close to the airport, but the risk of you getting (a) lost (b) on the wrong train, is higher than at the main railway station in Helsinki.)

Using the above tool I find several trains a day with price from 36,10 €

First, I suggest you use only Matkahuolto website. Matkahuolto is like a portal, or co-operative, it covers all the long distance bus companies in Finland. It is easier that way.

Second, to travel from Vantaa airport, you need to change buses as you wrote. The first company is usually Expressbus, and the second one Savon linjat. Rest area seems to be some kind of bus depot, where buses drop their passengers and others pick them up.

Third, the cost to Mikkeli is about €38 and takes around 3-4 hours, no sense of going to Helsinki and take a train (if the bus timetables fit yours). To most of the buses you can buy tickets via Matkahuolto website. If not, then onboard.

When you take the bus, you have to tell the driver you are going to Mikkeli and need to change in ‘rest area’, otherwise they are not going to stop there.

You can also use http://www.journey.fi/ to search for public transportation connections in Finland, e.g. http://www.journey.fi/search/en/?aa=169 ... v=#results
will show you the connections from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to Mikkeli. Currently the service gives you local bus connections and train connections and it says there that in a few weeks also the long haus bus timetables will be available there (they were there earlier but when Matkahuolto changed their database it did not work anymore...).

You could also type in the exact address in Mikkeli there and it would give you a door-to-door connection telling you exactly where to change buses and trains and also the walking routes between the means of communication.

Bus tickets at the airport are sold e.g. at the Airpro Travelpoint Travel Services 24h in the Arrivals Hall 3 but they can also be bought directly from the driver.

400 euros? Lol. tts expensive. I think i agree with you. taking the bus straight from the airport would be the best option as it is convenient. i still have luggage with me and taking the city bus to the train station would be abit of a hassle.

So yea, i think the airport to mikkeli way is the best. Again, when i board the bus , i have to inform the bus driver that i am going to mikkeli and he will inform me of the stop that i have to drop to change buses?

not at all, they hire psychics who can read your mind... actaully you need to tell you are going to Mikkeli when he chucks your luggage down below so it isn't in the wrong place when you switch - and make sure your luggage switches...

Of course we are making the assumption that the bus driver will be able to (and want to) speak English, other wise you could be in for a mystery tour of Keskisuomi
Going by Finnair bus down town, and then finding the train, has one big advantage.
There are folk there at the station who are paid to speak to, and advise, those who dont speak Finnish, so that they actualy get to the place they want to go to.
Not some place that a Non English speaking bus driver thinks one wants to go to.

I can imagine that one could get dropped at the Heinola rest area by the Jyväskylä bus, to await the connection to Mikkeli....several buses arrive and depart..which one is for Mikkeli..who does one ask? :?
Eventually someone says.."That Bus just leavingis going there...next one is tomorrow morning!"... :ohno:

Express bus drivers do speak English, about Savonlinjat I don't know. There will always be somebody on the bus speaking English. Actually, Express bus drivers are very courteous and helpful.
