Helsinki To Mikkeli Via Bus

Post by Jack86 » Tue Aug 12, 2008 12:22 pm

Hi,

I have searched through the internet and found 2 bus operators ( Matkahuolto & Expressbus ). I have also looked thru' their timetables and stuff. However , I am not so familiar with their "rest" area and transit. Can someone kindly explain what it means? Does it mean we stop and change buses or rest and carry on with the same bus?

Another question would be is it possible to buy the ticket from the airport and take the bus from the airport to mikkeli? It looks possible because they have bus terminals at the international terminal but i would like to know about anyone's experiences. It would be really really useful.

Thank you

Usually the "airport switch" happens with a rendez-vous with another bus... depens, sometimes they have direct ones. usually someplace to Mikkeli you don't switch the coach itself but it takes 10 at some nowheremäki in between, maybe switching drivers.

http://www.matkahuolto.fi/ and http://www.expressbus.fi/ should yield the same results, the buses are all operated by smaller firms, depending on the routes.

I did go on to Mikkeli a number of years ago but it was from downtown Helsinki, not the airport, and I don't remember changing....

The rest areas and whether you change buses depends on the route. The rest areas can be places by a cafe, so there may be some facilities, or sometimes it's just a bus shelter in a lay-by at the side of the road, where they will stop to swap passengers.

May I ask is there a particular reason for you to prefer road transport such as bus or taxi? Why not by train, that would be the obvious way to get there? Sure, you can take a taxi but the distance is 220 km, with various fees it' might cost you about 300 euros if you do not negotiate a price beforehand.

Erm, because i will be coming from overseas and i have luggage. To avoid the hassle of taking a shuttle service to the train station with my bags , i would just like to buy a bus ticket from the airport , take a bus from there, transfer and sleep along the way. It seems so much simpler that way?

Don't you agree? i would love to take the rail if of course it wasnt 40 mins away from the airport ( what i read)
