Corn tortillas found at S-market

Post by smilesalot » Mon Aug 18, 2008 8:06 pm

I was shopping at S-market in malminkartano and discovered soft corn tortilla's, brand label read Nuevo progresso white masa harina corn tortillas. Price was 12 for 2 euros or 12€ a kilo. I figured Id give them a try, first thing I tried was a Quesadilla with hot sauce, wow it was good, it was pliable didnt fall apart in the pan. I thought to good to be true next experiment, Taquito, oops I didnt have any guacamole so Im off to buy some.
My question is has anyone else seen them or tried them. Have they been in finland before?

That’s really quite surprising, considering the country ceased to exist in 1992! (But 16 years... and give or take a month or two... surely that’s a pretty good shelf-life? I suspect there might be some additives and stuff in them, though...)

I have been using the "Old El Paso" brand of corn tortillas for the last year. They have them at my local Prisma.

I have seen them in all the Prisma's in the capital city area. They are pretty good and beat the old el paso brand.

My Bad, I apologize, these tortillas are listed as being made in Praha Vychod, Ceska Republika

Unless your talking about the taco shells, I have a question? have you ever had real corn tortillas? I have never found anything from Old El Paso to be authentic, well except for the jalapeno peppers but they are of the lowest quality.Read the ingredient label, not the advertised label, only 29% corn flour and 71% other which I believe includes the primary ingredient bleached flour. The worst part is they are using corn flour, the stuff they make polenta with as well as corn starch. So now go to Prisma which is the owner of S-markets and buy gluten free corn tortillas and taste the difference. The packing date is 30.05.08 and best before 29.09.08 which means unfortunately lots of preservatives in these tortillas :( .

Right now I am enjoying homemade 7 layer dip with home make corn chips.

All our progress is an unfolding, like a vegetable bud. You have first an instinct, then an opinion, then a knowledge as the plant has root, bud, and fruit. Trust the instinct to the end, though you can render no reason.

You didn't say anything about "real" tortillas. I just said that there were corn tortillas available. If I only went after the real thing I would be in trouble here in Finland. Hell Pepsi and Coke aren't even the "real" thing here. Yes I have had the real thing. There is a lovely women from El Salvador on the South side of Milwaukee that make the best homemade tortillas and her empanadas are to die for.
Besides I only use them for my enchiladas. My sauce and filling can hide if I used cardboard instead of tortillas.
