It is all about competing/taking part..not winning...so I am told.
Oh, I get what your saying. But, on the other hand, if you only count the gold, then aren't you dismissing the accomplishments of the other athletes who won a medal?

It's nice that competitors who get 2nd or 3rd place get a bit of silver/bronzewear, but they LOST, there's only one winner, hence the table should be judged on golds, end of.
Sure the achievement of reaching and placing in an Olympic final is a massive achievement but it's the winning that counts and the taking part (and failing to win) is simply a confirmation of your abilities as one of the top athletes in the world, not the best.
I'm just glad others like American bashing too :D
You do know that I'm am American, right? 8) But I live in the People's Republic of Berkeley, and we consider ourselves more an occupied territory! I think we are the only city in the USA whose city government has passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush.

Looking at the table (the real one) the US would be able to feel the warm, fetid breath of Team GB on the back of their oily necks if it weren't for that Otter-child-thing. :beer_yum:

When I came back to my native country, after all the stories about Hitler, I couldn't ride in the front of the bus. I had to go to the back door. I couldn't live where I wanted. I wasn't invited to shake hands with Hitler, but I wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President, either.

Jesse Owens.

They can call Michael Phelps the greatest Olympian ever all they want but nothing he has done comes near to the accomplishments of Jesse Owens in 1936. ETA: IMNSHO

Well...I'm surprised...Canada seems to be doing a lot better than I thought...two gold medals...Was it rowing, or maybe canoe paddling??...

Anyway I don't really detect a lot of interest in the Summer Olympics here...but maybe that's just me, though. And who really cares who wins the gold in ping pong or water polo or softball or trampoline jumping... :)

Now the Winter Olympics.... that's what really matters.... :)

Yup, yup, now ya talking! :D

Winter games minus "Ice Dance" = top sport (i.e. no Torvill and Dean)

I think it is also the statistics... you got what - 30 million people to get 12 guys from... we have 5 million to get 12 from... so 12/30 sucks ass to 12/5 just mathematically... you should be able to be so far much better.... when we loose to Sweden we just blam half of their team is Finnish

Yeah...:) ...and when the Americans win ice-hockey events....we just say, "Well, of course!! Most of their players are Canadians anyway!!"

...Well, except for the ones who are Finns.... ...or Swedes... :)

OK, I should not post so drunk...but they are, and they have carpetted bogs - and you canucks are multicultural and I have nothing aginst you (except all those that say we should follow the canukistan model of www.notcanada.org) because you have an inkling of the understanding of "fashion" vs. "layered clothing".
