We've been burned so many times before, but this thing with the 200 metres was a force of nature - it got hardened cynics like me almost believing again. I had no idea of who took the other places in the race. Just couldn't take my eyes off the guy out in front.
After a few moments, one's mind does tend to ask the question, were drugs behind some of that? Perhaps not fuelled by suspicion, but as you say, too many burnings previous. I also wondered why all the swimming records were being smashed almost willy-nilly, but on further investigation it seems that the pools and even the lane dividers have been designed to assist the swimmers, eg. reducing resistance.

Back to the sprinting phenomenon himself, he said the track was fast. But look at the size of the brute, compared to the others. 6'4'', near 2m is he? Once those legs get going, the comparatively stumpy lot don't seem to be able to cope with Bolt's stride length and pace. Perhaps this will change the sprinting world and the tenet that shorter folk make for faster runners. And maybe there's no need to assume it's doping behind those runs.

Even though I doubt Bolt is drug free, you also have to take in other considerations...knowledge of training methods, diet, strategy etc is increasing all the time (or at least changing). There's big money these days in sports and people will spend a lot of time and effort getting things right or finding better ways.

The worlds a smaller place which allows athletes to travel more to train / live abroad / compete against new people etc etc. Look at the Finnish pony riders...very few live in Finland. Most live abroad (or so I've been told) or travel frequently to get the practice they need.

All these factors are allowing athletes to get better and better all the time. Athletes are no longer forced to train in the local club and make do with what they have.

But regardless - Bolt is on the juice!

There's also a thing , "scale of sports", as "scale of economics", which actually faivors big countries when calculating medals per citizen -ratio. It's a sure thing that say if Nordic countries would have a common team, the success would be better than calculating each country's medals. It's not only that all kinds of releys and team sports would thrive, but also individual sports would have better training enviroment, competition culture, etc.

Compairing, say Finland with UK or USA is futile.

Exept in ice hockey, as Finland beats both.

BTW, IMO it would be interesting to see how USA would succeed against EU team.

Yeah, the US would probably win cos no one in the EU team would get along and it would take 3 years to make a decision to pass or whatever after it's been passed through loads of meetings and had a few referendums.

I can imagine it now, the Brits wanting to do everything alone, the Germans telling everyone what to do, the French watching their own backs, the Italians causing trouble and controversy and the Finns screwing everyone on imported sporting goods and claiming that they always follow the rules and get the !"#¤% end of the stick!

Hs has today two articles on the Jamaica phenomenum, don~t seem to be online though. Interesting facts:
Ben Jonhson, Linford Christie, Young and a bunch of other more or less well know sprinters were born there.
Geneticists have identified a gene related to sprinting that seems to be present in 70% of the population of the island, while only 30% of the australians have it.
Some sprinter was caught with doping and kicked out of the team, what seems amazing given the reports of rudimentary or non-existant doping controls in the island.
The sprinting thing seems to be a national past, which might explain why their best talent turn to the discipline. Kind of like Finns with Rally and F1 driving.

I can hear the resentment but you are smart enough to know the distinction between top athletes and average population.

But if anyone wants to compare country performance based on country population you must love India. Tere's 1 billion people over there and they are having their best olympic score in the last 40 years.
Go check the medals table and see if indians are pissed :)

Interesting stuff...I wonder what the genes would be like in the - how can I put this? - country/countries the Jamaicans have originated from.

There was a lot of research done about the difference in genetics and physical make up of west Africans Vs east Africans and how it's effected their sporting achievemnts, east being long distance runners and west being sprinters.

It's quite an interesting subject although viewed by many as controversial.

They were saying on the beeb that it's the sporting equivalent of football in england and like you say F1/Rallying here. Kids aspire to be school champion etc so the combination of a desire + peer group pressure to be fast and this Actinen A thing would certainly give them an advantage. They also all no doubt train in the states anyway with the best facilities. Innocent until proven guilty i say.

Bob could have been a champion sprinter but he was stoned all the time and kept forgetting his running spikes. :D

Wasn't he actually a drummer but kept forgetting his kit?

How does Bob Marley like his donuts?

with 'Jammin...and I hope you like Jammin' too'

(bad, bad joke)

It's very true - I worked in high schools here and you could see how the ice hockey kids got preferential treatment from teachers, staff, and students...But there was also pressure on them to be the best in their sport. High expectations would motivate these kids, they didn't want to play badly and get bad looks the next day.

(it was amazing to actually see how a lot of young Finns in one school saw ice hockey as boring and sad "it's what your dad likes" and football really taking over as the sport of choice - Motivated by international stardom I guess)

Nice post
that race was so close as you watched the final 10 metres unfold you could see he won it but he's a very lucky boy.
He seems to break a lot of world records and have a lot of stamina to race all those heats and take the pressure of the finals i wonder, does anybody mention drugs and Phelps in the same sentence??????
