Graphic Designers needed in Helsinki? +update+

Hello there :d

I am 26 years old and from Germany, i finished my studies at a Design University in 2006 and got my Diploma, since then I worked at a Magazine and was responsible for all the graphical online stuffs, I also did some works for the magazine itself.

I can offer 2 years of experience creating a whole product with a magazine and website from scratch. I have worked in all different stages required for preparing a product including concept development, web design, print layouts and logo design. Part of my work was also to attend collaborations with several companies and creating designs in cooperation with different customers. The main programs I worked with, and where my main competences lie, are Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe InDesign CS2. Other programs I am familiar with are Macromedia Flash 8, Adobe Freehand and MS Office.

After my company got closed in February I am now preparing to move to Helsinki to my Finnish boyfriend and am looking for a full-time job.

Get yourself a rocking portfolio and start calling and mailing the digital companies in Helsinki - start with a list like webinfo.fi or similar.

Unfortunately though, as a word of warning, and you will have read this already on this site, it will be tough to find someone to take a chance on you. Even if you find the perfect company that is working in English and German that outsources their web design projects to freelancers - unfortunately you will probably still need to have some kind of personal recommendation - a good word from someone here.

Don't let that put you off though - there is so much digital work and the digital agencies are all expanding (though they are looking for concept planners more than just web designers) - you still have a chance. Be ruthless, sell yourself and speak to as many people as possible...

I was asked to put some reference in this thread, the site i am working for so far is http://www.egames.de.

But I also worked for the magazine itself, so i can also work on print objects:

(on a side note i also wrote articles for the magazine [like the Pinata and DoA Article are layoutet and written by me], as for the internet side ^^. So i would really like to work at a Games Magazine again because i am a huge games addict, but i guess thats pretty unrealistic]

yeah ich kann das sehen:D weisst du? du bleibst in deutschland es ist mehr besser!!! fuer dich! du hast viel sachen zu machen: die finnish sprache, die prüfung... und es ist mehr teuer als Deutschland, ich war fast 3 jahre in Berlin! also vergiss es!

3 years in Germany and your German sucks.

If Finland is worse to live in, why didn't you stay in Germany? I don't get this kind of additude. Money is not everything. Sometimes you just want new challenges in life, it depends on a person. Sometimes there is love involved. I had a cosy life in Munich but in my point of view Finland has so much more to offer.

Rachael, ich druecke dir ganz fest die Daumen und hoffe, dass es mit dem Job klappt - ich muss sagen, dass du schon talentiert bist!

Versuch's mal vielleicht am Anfang von zu Hause aus zu arbeiten, als Freiberuflerin - du kannst z.B. Aufträge von deutschen Arbeitgebern uebernehmen. Frag mal doch auch bei verschiedenen Zeitungen/Zeitschriften, sogar bei denen, die du kostenlos im Bus lesen kannst.

Dein Freund kennt die Namen der Zeitungen bestimmt, mir sind nur wenige bekannt, z.B. http://www.hs.fi, http://www.iltasanomat.fi/.

Habe ich mir auch schon überlegt, aber am Ende des Jahres muss man dann doch diesen ganzen Steuerkram selbst machen, davor habe ich ein wenig Angst -.-
Dann muss man sich um Kinden kümmern, selbst Rechnungen stellen usw, ich bin ja theoretisch noch ein Anfänger. Studium habe ich ja erst vor 2 Jahren abgeschlossen und dann 2 Jahre in einem Job gearbeitet. Ich weiß nicht ob ich mir das zutraue :/ Dann wiederum bleibt mir auch evt. nichts anderes übrig -.-

Rachael, you have a kick ass portfolio, it will definitely turn heads.

Design is one of those things that can't really be taught in school, and you obviously have the knack.

Normally, I'd tell people "don't waste your time coming here, if you think you are going to find graphic arts work", but I will not say the same for you.
