Re: Olympic closing ceremony....
It's quite touching to imagine.. I guess Jimmy himself must be in floods of grateful tears at the idea... that a man who was huge in the sixties and seventies and has been largely moribund (except for his charity work) for the past 20 years would "appeal to the yoof". Do you really think so? I guess I must be young (again).Johnny_Peebucks wrote:"We need someone who really represents sports today in England. Someone who embodies the youth and hope of 2012 London"
THEY CHOOSE BECKHAM FOR THAT!!! - you might have missed him - shaved head, gormless guy, bad ear rings...chavvy-looking
And what the hell do chinese drummers and opera singers represent regarding sports and Chinese youth?
Paige might not represnt sports but neither did any of the other bits of the GB thingy - (Beckham is the exception) But it wasn't really a representation of sports but of culture. And the influence of Paige and Zep is HUGE...No Zep, Sabbath, Purple and probably no rock in the form that we know it today. The influence of British music is HUGE and music is an important part of culture and a British export. Yes, I think there should have been something sport related but who do we have from the past Olympics that is internationally known?
Ok, we could have gone with a hipper choice, y'know...that monkey...sorry, Robbie Wiliams singing "Angels"...
Paige probably was the wrong choice but then again I don't see how an Opera singer or C. Dion or fireworks would attract the 'yoof' and inspire them..
"Hey, an Opera singer! I feel like going out and running a marathon in my hoodie will listening to Opera on my mp3 player"
As for "no rock in the form that we know it today"... well, that is a REAL stretch.

Re: Olympic closing ceremony....
I agree it could've been much much worse.... HRH Seb Coe or the Wombles/Paddington Bear/Teletubbies/entire cast of Eastenders or.... It will be a tough call simply because London is soooooo cosmopolitan. Now they are talking of Sir Alex for the Team GB (only incl. N.Ireland so Team UK actually) football team and I even heard Sky News Breaking News that the East End would be transformed into a Little Venice with barges transporting the masses (...not content with cable cars spanning the Thames, our self appointed City of London Chief of Transport (Boris) is really thinking outside the box these days
)
Would agree though, it would be nice to have a "sober" opening ceremony but I don't see that happening. My guess is they will trump China with a royal flush... no need to resurrect Freddie Mercury. The Queen, Princess Anne, Zara, Charlie and Co(e) on horseback full regalia, crown jewels.... No other nation can even get close

If you knew anything about music history, which I doubt you do, you would know that the influence of the "big 3" IS huge and shaped contempory rock music. I would give you a history of music but I think it would be lost on you and to be honest i would just get excited and write a whole web site on the stuff.otyikondo wrote:As for "no rock in the form that we know it today"... well, that is a REAL stretch.
I would say Paige himself wouldn't apeal to the youth entirely but compared to opera???? And the song is a classic song that most people can recognise...unlike some chinese bird and some bloke in a beard singing some pants load of wank.
The point of using Paige was to 'rock n roll' up the olympics...and personally that's not a bad think...People jumping through hoops might be your thing, smiling asian kids waving before they go to the sweat shop might do it for you and fireworks might excite you but the fact is to the average kid out there...those things are pretty weak.

I just think the Rolling Stones would have been more globally recognisable, i love Led Zeppelin but i doubt my sister or anyone else in my family, let alone the rest of the world, would know who Jimmy Page is. Poor choice in my opinion.
Perhaps 'Street Fighting Man' would be apt for the UK Olympics?

Oh I can't spell....( i checked which spelink it was too - stupid Google!)
I thought about the Stones too...but come on, the chance of cardiac arrest / stroke / flatties on the wheel chair...too big a risk. (i'm sure cost had something to do with it too)...
As for an appropriate song...anything with drug references!
should have got Ozzy in, he'll jump aorund the stage like a loon for a bottle of Vod and a line or two of coke.
