Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki

Post by cressers » Tue Aug 26, 2008 10:47 pm

Hey

i have been offered job in helsinki, and it means I have to work in helsinki (funny that)

Now we live in Tampere, and dont want to move. Does anyone do this daily commute?? I am thinking I can work from home 1 day a week.

Interested in how manageable this is. In the UK, 1.5hrs each way is fine, but here, is seems alien.

Thoughts and input

my boss did that... we get guys coming down from Hämeenlinna... depends on what "this end" is like - as in where your office is if its worth using car or the train or even the coach... with car you need to know the Helsinki rush hour "when not to be in places" as its 1h 30 minutes on the highway and then 2hours getting the last 15km on ring 1

I did a 1.5 hr commute (not in Finland) for several years and it sucked the life out of me. 15 hrs a week just wasted time. At first, you try to convince yourself that it is not *that* bad, and that you have all this time to read (if you take the train) or time to think or whatever. But then you kind of realize that you start to plan your life around that commute. As in:

- praying that nothing goes wrong because it might take you 2x as long to get home (if at all)
- mentally calculating the costs you have spent on commuting and the much better uses that money could have had
- never wanting to go out after work because it just delays your commute
- having time to just eat and then go to bed when you get home
- feeling like you are in a rush all the time
- dealing with other crabby commuters (you feel like you have put in a few days work before you even get to your job)
- etc

I would never, ever do it again. But it depends how bad you want/need the job and what kind of quality of life is good for you. You have to REALLY love the job, otherwise you will probably become really resentful of it.

Depends really on work. Some people do commute.

It helps if you can work in the train, so that you actually get some work hours done in commute and then can be at the office shorter time.

If not... It's 10+ hour days, 4 days a week of which you are only paid for 7,5(or whatever your work hours are mentioned to be)... Until you either snap, switch job or get your job changed to more fitting one (with less lost time)

it would be in ruoholahti, so in theory train/metro should be easiest and cheapest.

Car, at 380km a day, that is some pounding to any car....2k a week, 100k a year. The maintenance would be high and fuel probably more than the 400€ the train costs.

I could work on the train, and was thinking if i got the 730 train, and returned on the 4pm, that would not be "so" bad.

The trains here are much better than the UK in terms of ovrecrowding, so you always get a seat, so i can work.

Let me get it straight...

You leave from TRE with train which leaves at 7:30 and leave from HKI in train that leaves at 16:00?

Remember to add to your calculations how much time it takes for you to get to and from station in the morning and evening.

I used to commute from beyond Tikkurila to Otaniemi and that took me anything from 45min to 1,5h with trains and buses...

from 7:30 to 16:00 means 8 hours 30 minutes. of which you will spend 3 hours 30 minutes on train. so you will have 5 hours. again this is inclusive of going from train station to work and back. how long do you think you will work and get paid in a day anyway? and it costs 50 euros to and fro tampere to helsinki but perhaps you can buy commuting training pass.

well, if you do the 4-day week then you probably best have those 44-trip coupon books... and then a non-resident travelcard for the metro... wouldn't say its a total dog depending then how much time it gets to get to the train station at Tampere end...

Well... the 6.04 IC is in Helsinki 7.52... give or take a few... so in the office about 8.30 ... +7,5 & lunch = 16.30 out... then back... 17.06 IC is in Tampere 18.52... so then getting home...

pricewise... 44 trips for IC 887,70 € á 20,17

cheapskating with the Lähijuna... tukutukutukutuku
06.32 is in Helsinki 08.41 (taking the 06.11 express being in Hel 08.37 isn't much express as its slower but no tukutuku)
OK, so in office at 9... out at 17.00
17:19 Helsinki 19:22 Tampere Lähijuna ... tukutukutukutuku (theres and express a bit earlier)
Ei vaihtoja Kesto: 2:03
tukutukutukutukutuku price 44 trips 693,00 € (which also allows you on the express trains) á 15,75

travel costs are tax deductible between 500 and 4700...

I did it in the 90s, it sucked and like Kay, I'd never do it again.

Was looking at the 30day pass for the pendalino 444€ vs 400 for the IC - seemed worth the extra.

Seems it depends on 2 things.

1. IF they let me work from home 1 day a week
2. IF i can work on the train. I would say 6.5hrs in the office, plus 2x 1.5hrs on the train is 9.5hrs a day. (I think this will be hard as it will not set good example to the team if I leave early every day........)

Thanks for the input.

My conclusion. Its possible, I can claim the travel as a tax break, but I will end up hating it.

Other factor is THAT job vs Current job :)

Sorry, not clear. I meant leave TRE at 730, office by 915, leave at 4pm and skip lunch, so get home about 6.

Its pushing it, but again working on the train is possible. I will have lots of paperwork to do.

IIRC skipping lunch and leaving early is not an option, as the company has to give you the lunch break, even if you do not want it.

It sounds like a tough trip to me, but one of my co-workers does the Tampere-Vantaa trip daily by car (but he swears he will only do it for four months more).
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.
