Re: Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki
yeah, the "spendolino" is faster, and you do have the comforts... dunno the 30-day pass vs. the 44-trip ticket difference (if you don't travel only 4 days a week?) so thats 8 tickets a week, so thats 5 and a half weeks travel...
OK, *if* you can do the 4-day work week...
44 tickets on spendolino 1056,- for 22 days of travel...á 24 euros
30 day ticket on spendolino = 444,50... thats 16 days of travel... á 27 euros
so there isn't a huge difference, if you do 5 days a week the 30-day pass is cheaper... if you have more random schedule (like 3-4 day business trips elsewhere then the coupon pass works better)

Forgot to add earlier...
In my experience, my co-workers and bosses were all fabulously UN-supportive of my having a long commute. IIRC, they would be pissed that I had to leave *exactly* at 5PM every day (there was a lot of eye-rolling) and it basically made it impossible to do any late nights or last minute meetings. So, unless your co-workers are doing the exact same commute as you, they just will not care or understand what you go through to get there and will get annoyed at your perceived inflexibility. And even if you are doing work on the train, no one will believe you anyhow. And if they let you leave at 4PM, other people will want to do the same thing and complain about how it unfair, blah blah blah.
Urgh. I guess I am more bitter about the memories than I actually thought.

Where do you work? Our offices are dead after 17:00, most leave before 16:30, some as early as 15:30 (if they arrived early).kay30 wrote:In my experience, my co-workers and bosses were all fabulously UN-supportive of my having a long commute. This is Finland, very few people work into the evening. In my experience nobody would bat an eyelid if someone regularly left at 16:00, as long as they are getting their job done.

Re: Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki
I am aware that this is Finland. However, in my earlier post I stated that my experience with commuting was not in Finland. And I still somehow doubt that people working in advertising or high tech (even in Finland) are leaving at 3-4pm in the afternoon. People in my new office now, (in Finland), regularly stay till 6-7pm.

Re: Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki
I got colleagues who commute from Porvoo & Hämeenlinna and we have multiple offices "in the boonies" and we can do distance work depending on the project & such we're resourced to.... so for us its not 9-5... we have duty phones for 24/7 and such so it depends a lot... and if I have a customer next door what the f* I'm doing at the office if I can take care of the emails and tickets before I go there... depends totally of what kind of work you do, and how anal your office culture is. after all here you wear sandals with socks... or Reinos...

Re: Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki
All really depends on what one does.
Specialists and higher echelon workers (or ones thinking they are such) tend to have very flexible hours. I try to leave at 3 (coming to work at 7) but it might be that I do not leave before 5...
Overall, it is rare to have such thing as enough work. It tends to be from too much and way too much to "OMFG YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING!"-much.

Re: Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki
I did it a few years ago. I would leave home at 5:05 and be back at about 6, sometimes a bit later. 5 times a week. I was studying and even managed to pass one exam by studying in the train. That was in the first month. After the first weeks, I just started using my trips to catch up with my sleep and somehow always managed to wake up just before Tampere and Pasila stations...
I lasted 5 months, when my wife demanded me to stop. I had no "professional life" (after work meetings, social appointments with coworkers, etc) nor could I pay much attention to my family. It sucked the life out of me. That's my experience.
During my trips I met someone who was doing the opposite journey, traveling three times a week to work at posti. But he was living near TRE's train station and you should know where posti is located in Hki
Have you considered renting a room to stay in hki twice a week, working long hours and/or doing only three days in Hki?

Thanks for all the replies.
The job would be product development, (big mobile phone company) and so I would really need to be on hand to deal with the team. The work environment IS very flexible, and I think as long as I was there most the day, it would be OK. As you say, most people bail at 4, and this is fine. I am used to working from home, or "somewhere" and most of the supplier stuff would be in asia, lots of early morning telcos, so not so bad.
Carpooling is a no-no. There is no flexibility, if I need to stay late, what do I do, and also I cant think of any other idiot who would want to do it
Quick calcs, wear and tear of 2k km a week, would be expensive on fuel and services etc. And I could not work while travelling
The 30day, vs booklet of tickets is something I will have to look at. I think the booklet sounds like a good idea. As this is product development, I assume about 25% travel, so if I went that route I would not need to worry about "wasting" days while I was away.
Lets see how this goes.
I am still on the fence at the moment. Current PM job got more interesting today, so maybe I will not be so miserable for the 2H....

Re: Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki
We live in tammela, so its only a 10min walk to the station. The apartment thing is "possible" but I really dont like the idea. That then means at least another 300€ a month for a shared place, or 400€ for a small place + internet + tv + water etc etc plus we have been doing the opposite, my GF was working in Hel in the week and coming back on weekends. We have hated that, and the thought of doing it for ages seems less than cool.
Maybe the odd night in a hotel would be ok.

Re: Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki
yes, ive done this commute, its horrible!! But i was working really long days leaving at 6:30 am, getting back to Tampere at about midnight, straight to shower and bed then up again to get the train at 6:30-7:00am. it really is horrible, i didnt have a life. Not to mention the cost, your talking about €50-€60 a day just on travelling! But at the time it was something i had to do to get my foot in the door, and sometimes you just gotta do it!
Re: Anyone communte Tampere-helsinki
Don´t forget to add the cost of the non-resident travel card for the metro - it´s about 135 Euros per month!
The Pendolino is very often delayed, by the way.
Well, it depends if this job is worth travel costs of 500 Euros per month! What you get back from the tax office is very little, to be honest.
